Funny you ask that. I was just at a Nissan dealership today looking around and asked a salesperson the same question. I asked if there was going to be a special 25th Anniversary Max for 2006. Of course, they had no idea. They even admitted they get most of their information, like us, quicker from the internet than from the home office. Didn't surprise me. I would presume we'd hear something about it by, at least, Spring '05, but who knows.

WHEELMAN - You know better than to expect anyone to guess what Nissan might do, or when they might do it. That would be feasable only with totally logical and rational entities. The '06 probably won't be 'finalized' for another year or more.
Having said that, we can postulate certain Maxima tendencies:
The body style, shape, size, etc, will not change before the 2008 seventh gen arrives. This is practically guaranteed.
The changes for '05 and '07 will be minimal (second and fourth years of Maxima gens seldom have changes of significance).
The third year (which is 2006 for this gen) of any Maxima generation means minor (but distinguishing) cosmetic changes to both the front and rear of the car. A color or so will be added, and one could be dropped. These are also givens.
The '06 will also have technical changes to separate it from the '04s and '05s. This is for certain.
The question is, what will those technical changes be? This is where many folks will have many guesses.
Most will feel a touch of HP may be added. I concur. The Maxima is too close to the Alltima in power, and behind the TL. I would guess somewhere around 280 HP.
Some will talk about superchargers or turbochargers. I do not see those as bring in the Maxima's future.
I haven't heard it mentioned, but the Maxima will probably switch to a six speed automatic tranny in either '06 or '08.
Some will suggest AWD. I feel this is definitely in the Maxima's future. In fact, I would bet it will be on either the '06 or the '08. Right now, I'm leaning '08, but, because of the significance of the 25th anniversary, who knows? Nissan might bring out the normal SE and SL for '06, and also have a 25th anniversary special edition, which might include AWD. Who knows?
The '06 might include such touches as outside mirrors that turn down when the car is put in reverse, so as to see where the rear wheels are in relation to the curb (as on the TL).
The '06 will definitely have some means of letting the driver know if a tire is low. We can only hope they use an active system that actually measures pressure instead of a relational rotation system that simply says the pressure varies between tires.
At some point, the Maxima will have some form of detecting objects in the rear when the car is in reverse. This is already in the FX35 and FX45, but may not reach the Maxima until '08.
We can conjecture endlessly, but we probably won't know anything for sure about the '06 for another year or more.

You're right, there would only be 5 years between special editions. But, it just seems to me, when it comes to cars (or anything for that matter) that the 25th Anniversary is a much bigger deal than the 20th Anniv. I'm not near an expert on cars, but I've heard of a lot more 25th Anniv. Special Edition cars than 20th Anniv. cars (such as Mustang, Camaro, etc.) Someone correct me if I'm wrong though. But, you make a good point in that only 5 years between special editions is overkill.
