Sirius Satellite Radio Hookup Part 2

The following is "not" fiction. In trying to get some answers about satellite radio installation I first went to Circuit City. I asked the sales guy if they had what I needed. " Bring the car around back and we'll take a look". Wrong answer..............Then I went right to the dealership. I first went to parts and service. They sent me back to the sales dept. From sales things got downright ugly. They weren't sure so they made a few phone calls. Finally they suggested I go over to the nearby stereo place that does most of their work. I did. The tech guy said the problem is that I need a receiver that works with my display screen. I'm obviously not going to add one when I have a built in one. He made 2 phone calls and couldn't get an answer about what receiver and/or adapter I needed to work with my head unit. It was then he tried making a case for a portable screen and that's when I walked out. Does anyone know exactly what my 2005 Maxima needs in order to get satellite and use the display already in the car? Thanks

It's not surprising in the least... I went to my dealer -- already knowing the answer -- and asked the sales and the service guys about it, and they both said that they Nissan didn't make an XM receiver for the Maxima, only Sirius.

It seems like if you want straight answers, you have to go online and get them...

But what you reallt need to do is stop going to Circuit City and whatever to find info that you should know they're gonna know nothing about. They're gonna try to push some aftermarket stuff on you that doesn't work with the info screen -- at best. Worst-case they'll probably try to sell you into a whole new HU without knowing that it won't fit without a dash kit...

You either need to a) get the parts yourself from Grubbs or b) go to an installer and tell them you want the OEM sat tuner for your car installed. Chances are that if post on the Audio/Classifieds sections you'll find someone in your area that's 100% familiar with the system and the setup.

All the info that you need is in that other thread... links, parts and even pictures of the installation. If you wanna do it yourself, I'm sure that you can -- as long as you don't have 2 left hands or something... If you don't feel like you're up to it, just get someone else to do it for you.

And I'd suggest going to another dealer anyway... doesn't look like your guy knows what the hell is going on with your car. If you go over and tell them that the car is pre-wired and you want the Sirius tuner installed, they should know exactly what you're talking about. They'll order the part and probably charge you $100 for labor, so it might come out around $500 or so -- about $150 more than getting the tuner/antenna and installing it yourself.

The Grubbs sight only lists the Nissan/Infiniti Standard OEM Satellite Radio Receiver for Sirius. I had the choice of having XM or Sirius installed. The OEM receiver seems to be made by Terk. Does anyone know if this a proprietory agreement with them? Is this the only choice I have?

Ok, just called the local stereo place. Yes indeed Terk has a proprietory agreement with Nissan. The guy also is looking into a Terk XM receiver. This guy answered all my questions in a couple of minutes. Main Street Stereo, Sayville, NY. Thanks Brian

That's because Sirius is WAAAYYY better than XM.

Both should be available though. Maybe Grubbs XM is out of stock, contact them to see if they carry XM. Otherwise you have to go to another stealership. Any should be able to order for you, even Grubbs.

The Nissan OEM Sirius and XM receiver is made by Clarion.... but not to be confused with the Clarion unit made for Clarion aftermarket headunits. The Nissan unit has a different connector than the standard Clarion CEnet connector--this is where the proprietory agreement comes in but it's not with Terk.

Anyway, as a previous poster recommended, most people can do this install easily and save some money in the process. I did it in about 15 minutes and just put the antenna on the rear deck near the speakers... works great!

I got my Sirius unit from Grubbs. Also the antenna and splitter kit. They sent me full installation instructions. It was easy to install and it works great without doing any wiring inside the car. The receiver is snapped into a prewired plug in the trunk, and the antenna cable is routed up to the top of the rear window. The antenna wire is very small diameter and is easily tucked under the molding at the RH side of the window. Grubbs is also very quick to answer any email question and also phone calls.
I have no personal connection to Grubbs, but they give great service and a fair (low) price.
I have the installation instructions in PDF format. I will email the file to all who send me a Private Message request. I wish I knew how to attach the file here!

I noted that Grubbs offered Sirius for the Maxima, but only mentioned XM for my new Titan. I asked John at Grubbs about this and he said you can pick whichever you like, they will both work with the Nissan wiring harness, so long as you get the sat tuner unit from Nissan. After having both Sirius and XM, my preference is Sirius.

Sirius Install

O.K. Here's the deal. I just installed a FACTORY SIRIUS UNIT in my 04. The car was pre-wired (Look for a sticker at the bottom front corner of the left "B" pillar). Everything install's in the trunk in an hour or so. There no directions with the kit except for the antenna template. Make sure you ask the part person or the mechanic to print out the installation instructions for you. This was so easy my wife could have did it! I paid $357.00 w/tax. I called the Sirius 800 number had music in 15 Minutes!!

$357.00 ! Where did you buy it? Grubbs has the receiver for $265. I'm guessing since it's not listed as a kit I'll need the antenna and splitter. I'm hoping to keep it around $300. Shoot, I should have gotten it factory installed for $400.

I ordered it thru the dealer where I bought the car. I'm sure if I shopped around I could have saved some money. I just didn't want any problems!
At least none so far..............
