Cutting off the Cat

I was told from a 5th generation Maxima owner to cut my cat but only if the 02 sensors are before it. Has anyone done this to the 6th gen. max and what are the pros and cons of doing this?

Gut the cat you mean.

Pro: 'Some' performance boost
Con: Forget about passing smog, and high temps will occur

Just get a aftermarket hi-flo cat.
Stay away from Random Tech. It's paper crap. Ever see a paper cat collapse? I have, with the 350. Not a joy filled event, especially at the price they charge.

If you really want to get rid of them, buy test pipes.

here are some crawfords for the Z i recommend. Not sure if they'll fit but if you contact Mr. Crawford I'm sure he'll modify it for the max.

Stillen has some test pipes for the Z/g35. Wonder if they'll fit the Max.

SPeaking of crawford...I wonder if the plenum will fit Max... that would be nice... Too bad my 350z is gone.

On the stock system, the cat is part of the "y" pipe. The aftermarket "y" pipe eliminates the cat and goes straight through to bolt to the rear section, in front of the resonator. There are also two pre-cats in front of the "y" pipe. I am sure that putting in a "y" pipe that eliminates the cat is totally illegal for street use in all 51 states.
When my car needs to be tested for emissions (Next year), I am going to see if it will pass without the cat. I am betting it will.

no, the main cat bolts up the flange on the straight long end of the y pipe.

Like redop max said, the cat is integrated into the y pipe. Best thing would be to wait for headers if your looking for power.

excuse my ignorance on the subject but i pretty much got everything everyone said so far and i think i might order that y pipe but getting the headers would replace the y pipe? so it would be a waste to get it if i were planning on getting the headers when they became available

I was told by Custom Enterprises that their headers may or may not include the y-pipe.

Cool, thanks for all the info. i just went to www.howstuffworks.com and read all about that cats and mufflers...etc Now i see what you meant, jason, about gutting out the cats, i always heard cutting but gutting makes a lot more sense. As far as the emissions test, michigan doesn't require them so i'm not worried about passing anything.

Well considering they sell a y pipe as a seperate piece already, then that is probably true. I guess they are thinking ahead, people can buy the y pipe and complete the headers with the other 2 pieces.
