Some Comments About My 2005 Max

So far the car is great. But I do have a few questions. My driver's side seat belt is "very" sensitive. Even the smallest movement locks it sometimes. Is this normal? Also, a number of times I've put the pedal down a few seconds after the smell of fumes is noticeable. This worries me quite a bit. The climate control setting has the air coming from outside. But this shouldn't be an issue. And of course there is the front wheel drive. I haven't had one in 15 years and it's been tough to get used to. The feeling of the car trying to get away from me is quite strong, especially on turns. Of course me gunning the engine at the same time might have something to do with it
I finally settled the satellite radio situation. I'm waiting until I get to Florida. The dealership was no help and grubbs seems to be the only solution. I'll order the receiver when I get there.

.....gotta ease up on the gas, if I think I know what smell you're referring to it's more of a burning rubber smell than gas (than again you're completely smelling gas which in that case I would definately check that out A.S.A.P.) You have to be easy the first 5,000 miles and break that engine properly otherwise in the later years of your car's life you'll regret you burned that engine out from the beginning.

Not that I've noticed. And to 2k4MaximaSE believe me I don't get too crazy with the power. Especially trying to get used to this FWD "torque monster"

5000 mile break-in? What is there about this engine that requires that kind
of break-in?

It's not 5k, but many people still consider an engine still breaking in at that point. Manual says actual mileage, which your dealer should of told you, I think it's less than 1k. I don't remember actual #, but my salesman told me 1/2 the distance recommended by Nissan. Others consider it so well designed that it's broken in enough when it leaves the plant.

ive always heard that about 3000 was the recommended amont of miles for breaking in the motor, any motor...............

i had a friend with a new a4, and the shop HIGHLY recommended not to do anything to it until 1500 miles.

IIRC, the drivers manual for the 6th gen says 1200 miles for the breakin. We are not supposed to be doing jackrabbit starts, quick stops (especially from speed), driving very long at a constant speed, or exceeding 4000 rpms during that period.

Having found from 55 years of driving that engines seem to do better when broken in properly (I put 206,000 miles on an '85 Max, and the engine was still smooth when I traded it), I always wait at least 2500 to begin 'letting the horse run'.

The first 500 to 1000 miles are the most critical. Heavy brake usage before the pads and rotors have properly seated is very tough on your braking system parts. Hard acceleration, high rpms or running at constant speed before engine parts have properly seated can lead to early repairs and shorten engine life.

When I see ANYONE (salesman, service person, customer, etc) abusing a Maxima that I know has very low (maybe even single digit) miles on it, I know I am looking at a totally braindead idiot.
