WHat if i were to purchase perfectly fine HID housings? Would it be plug and play or are there differences in the wiring?

That is what I did. The only thing extra I had to do with my max was the wiring harness is lightly different. The power connector for the halogen is different that the connector for the ballasts. So I did a splice with the correct water tight connector.
I can name 2 things that would make the job easier
a 2.5" holesaw
And a good way to take apart the front of the halogen headlamp. The way it looks to me is this. The reflector for the halogen is loaded from the front and not the back. So to get it out I had to cut it out with snips which made a big mess.
The hid slips in and out of the back easily
So do i end up ruining the halogen housing if i remove the projector from it?
I think i may be able to pick up wrecked HID housing easily from a friend who works in a body shop. I want to just swap everything i need over to my current lights but i'd liek to do it as OEM as possible?
Is the wiring big enough to support the HID's during startup? As for the wiring change, i assume i can just pick up a 9006 (or 9005 whatever the max takes) MALE connector off ebay and splice that to the connector needed for the ballast that way i don't have to cut off the original connectors so i can return everything to stock one day?
As for the projectors, they are not side specific are they? In other words if i get two driver's side headlights could i swap the projector from one over to my pass headlight?
BTW, unrelated but i found out the halogen bulb that the Maxima uses is called an HIR bulb. It's brighter than a standard halogen bulb. It's also expensive, a pair of HIR bulbs can cost almost as much as HID bulbs. Even though a 9006 bulb will fit, it's not as bright as the original HIR bulb will be.

I want to make sure I am not mis-leading you. My experience is completely on the Maxima. So with that said
The headlight housing is exactly the same. The projectors were not side specifac. The wiring harness's were identical except for the way the light bulb is connected and the ballast gets its power. All the wires were 14 ga on both I think the wire on the load side of the ballast was 14 as well but it may have been 12 it had a stainless steel braided shield over it. The bulbs that I used (factory) are d2s and not any of the retrofit crap.
So these are the things you need.
1 hid projectors
2 hid ballasts
3 d2s bulb plug
4 balast power connector (not techinical name)
5 d2s bulbs 4300k
Thats it. The best investment I have made so far. I am like a little kid I cant wait to get up an drive my car in the dark to the gym or turn on those headlights...lol

Awesome, that's what i assumed but i just wanted to confirm it with someone before i started buying parts. I was going to go with a retrofit kit but decided to just do it "right" so to speak.

How is the light output and color? I might be interested in retrofitting my Mustangs with HIR's

Light output on the lows was noticably more, color output is the same a standard halogen.
The high beam was a significant difference...

I am new here, actually just purchased my maxima last night. From doing car repairs we have an extra HID complete fixture for the right side from what I believe was a 05. I have been doing my best to read the last five pages and cannot plainly see if I can just remove my headlights and replace with the new HID complete housing. I have already located the left side but of course before I spend the money I want to be sure it will work. I will be doing what I can tonight to see what can be done.

Yes
To follow up to my post above it was Plug and play for me (sort of)
What I did was removed the xenon system from a broken light and installed it on my light. No pictures yet but a little modification to the non-xenon fixture was needed. However it can be done. Took me a little under 2 hours because of doing it the first time. I should more than cut that time in half when doing it again. Even less time for just replacing the lamp.
But I least I was able to verify for myself that a xenon system can be installed on non-xenon car with no wiring mods. This is wat I plan to do on my driver side, remove non-xenon light, replace with xenon. All this without completely removing front bumper.

Can you detail what is involved in removing the halogen housing/reflector/assembly and installing the HID? Is there any cutting involved or is it designed to be disassembled from the rear with the proper tools.
CM
SO I GIVE UP HOPE ON HIDS till someone comes out with something to solve all this pain and misfortunate us MAXIMA owners go through who didn't know HID was an option.
SO TO CUT A LONG STORY SHORT:: I BOUGHT A 9006 KIT (8000k) for my 9012 hALO****S(GRRRRRrrrRRrrrRR) , paid the manufacturer extra 25$ for modification on both 9012 bulbs to 9006. Paid an extra $100 cus I don't know **** about installation. After Hours of work, both HIDS were put in. Drove home both were working and lookin mighhtty fine! Drove for a while,, I noticed my Left side went OUT... right was still workin... a week later, after sending the left side kit back,,, RIGHT SIDE went OUT... NOW.. hes sending the left side back because we thought it was a bad PART.. now the right side is not working now. SOOO Im so sick and tired of it that i'm giving up on HIDS FOR NOW,, and spending more money on DUBS.
Question now is.. WHATS THE BRIGHTEST AVAILABLE HALOGEN BULB FOR us 9012 OWNERS? HIR stock? or is that something NEW for the halogen industry? HELPppppppppppPPpppppppppppppPP...

I'm resurrecting this thread because there's one thing about this mod thats still not clear to me, even after having read all the stickies. I've got the bulbs, ballasts, and projectors so I'll be putting everything in tomorrow. I have a question to those who have done this mod: Is the grey, rear housing cap in the Halogen Lamp large enough to fit the HID projector/reflector, along with the bulb plug? Or will I need to get the plug used in the xenon housing separately?
In the pictures that BLAKE0072 posted, he ended up cutting piece of the cap off to fit everything in, but he was initially using a retrofit kit. In the event that the halogen caps are too small, I've already started hunting for a set of caps for the xenon housing, but to no avail. The stealership is charging me 80 bucks a piece - comes with harnesses though. If it doesn't fit, I'm gonna getto-rig it with duct tape until I find a set lol.

Well when I finally got to performing this modification I had one halogen cap and one xenon cap. The halogen cap fit just fine. I had no troubles putting the cap on.

Yeah I got all the info I needed on the conversion from that thread and this one. The only thing I wasn't sure about was whether or not that hallogen cap fit or not. At anyrate, I'm waiting for a day when I have time to do the install...should have them in in a couple of days.
Ok I got stuck in the process of working on this. I switched the projectors out on my passenger side, have all the wiring set up....but I do I need to splice the ballast wire to get it into pass the sealant cap? Kinda relucant to do so.
When I performed my upgrade I decided to go for a more OEM look,so I took out my head light and drilled out a hole where there balast would go on an OEM HID assembly. and ran the ballast wire inside the headlight. But I was using the HID parts from an 05 Maxima. I sealed that bad boy up with some RTV silicone, let it dry, then I took a hose to it to ensure everything was sealed properly, which it was.
But if you have to splice the ballasts wire, it wont hurt any just make sure you secure the splices, and cover them up. when i spliced wires I shot some RTV inside heat shrink tubing and shrank it.
Sorry I dont have any pics bro.

Thanks guys. I ended up widening the hole in the grey cap, and running the brown connector through there. I sealed it all with silocone....HOPEFULLY its a good seal. After baking the headlamps, replacing the projectors, and many hours of labor, I realized that one of my ballasts doesn't work. Really sucks. I don't feel like re-baking the headlamp to swap the halogen projector in, so I'm running one HID until I can find another D2S projector. If anyone is willing to part with one, let me know.
Funny thing is, a single HID headlight is just as bright as a pair of halogens.

You opened your headlights to replace the projectors...? You really didnt have to do all that unless you were painting or performing some other mod. You could have simply pulled out your projectors from the headlight...with a little patience of course.

Thanks for the ebay find. I'll keep an eye on that.
I got my bulbs and ballasts together for 100 bucks. It was a steal, until I realized a month later that one of the ballasts doesn't work. I'll bring it up to the seller, but I don't expect them to be empathetic after a full month has gone by.
I'm gonna go salvage yard shopping for a D2S Ballast tomorrow. If I don't find anything, I'll have to wait it out for something to arrive from ebay. I have no intention of putting my halogens back in, so I'm driving with one headlight until I find a ballast. Really don't care what it comes off at this point, as long as its a quality ballast.
Same happened to me after I installed my lights, I took a hose to the engine bay while washing and drowned one of my ballasts, this was before I drilled into my headlights and installed them properly. I was driving around for almost a month with one headlight until I caught a good deal on Ebay. And your right, one HID still gives more lighting than two Halogens.
Good luck searching around, but I think you might still get things cheaper on ebay.

I bought a 2005 Maxima SE from a car auction with a bad valve body (costed me $1200 to replace with a new one from Nissan, but not installed by Nissan, which I had a shop or the time n tools to do it myself grrr) Also the Tensioners must be bad as I can hear the chains friction, but it'll have to do for some more monthsss. lol… and It came with what seems to be an aftermarket HID set on the passenger side, with a (full of humidity) Halogen drivers side headlight. A bad fog light, no high beams it seems, i hafta look more into it within the next few days or maybe tonight God willing. Also might any of you have any clues as to why I have this issue. I plugged in my tmobile duel car/war charger and NOTHING happens, seems no power is being transmitted.. truely odd. Havent checked the fuses yet, hope its simple. Cheers to all you enthusiasts, been reading tons of info from tons of you over the last week, thought id never get around to writing something onboard! lol Cheers again to more fun with our maximas!!
http://ddmtuning.com/ for great prices on hid kits. or vvme maybe?
Not advertising or anything for them. Just throwin a great deal out there! (seriously, like 45 bucks shipped for ballasts and bulbs)

ok i know im a tad bit late but i have a 05' max (se) but i have been skimming threw and seeing some concerns .. first things is what bulb size do i use? 9005? if so is it a direct fit? Second thing i believe ive seen that it said that the reflector for the high beams gets melted is this true? if are there measures i can take to prevent this? will some one get back to me ?
Yup, the 9005 kit (what I got) will work fine as well as a 9006 and it'll be a direct fit. Although with the 9006 it MIGHT take slight modification in filing down some of the tabs for it to fit properly.
Anyways, no it won't melt the metal shutter that's used for high beams. Hope that answers your question.
