Service Engine Light Is On Steady

ANybody have their service engine light on steady? Just happened tonight, I checked gas cap and even filled up. It just hit 20,000 when it came on. What should I do, should I wait a couple days before going to the stealership?
THanks

I forget how many cycles you have to go through before the SES light will go away if it's a problem with the gas cap, but as I recall it was more than a couple (and invovled traveling at highway speeds, etc). I've heard that Autozone will give a free diagnostic code check... if the number doesn't pertain to the evap system, then I'd take it in... actually, I'd probably just take it in anyway.

I wouldn't fool around with it. I'd stop in the dealership and see if they'd give it a quick check.

AUTOZONE!!!!!!!!!! Unless you know the dealership is NOT going to charge $$$ to hook up the diagnostic tool to your car. Usually the stealership BS's you and says there is a $75 fee. If that is the case go to Autozone. Call your dealership and find out the details. a phone call is a much faster way to answer this question then driving to the dealership, have them tell you it's gonna cost you, and you leave pissed b/c you wasted time and gas when AUTOZONE does it for free.

You could do the Autozone thing.....or take it to the dealership, or just let ot cycle for a few days after you make sure the gas cap or oil cap are tightened.

If it turns out to be an Emissions problem, should be covered under your bumper to bumper warranty. I would not imagine the dealer charging you a penny. You have under 36K on it, should be under warranty. Hell, I had a rim with a pinhole in it, defective....replaced under warranty.

one of the best investments i made was getting an obd2 code reader, $50 on ebay, comes with a code book. youll never have to worry about the SES again, just check it right away. can also split it withn a few freinds, as long as their car ia after 96.
