The wave! Urban legend? Myth or truth!?

Ok back in the day, my neighbor had a *****in Corvette. I used to go cruisin with him and one day another Vette was coming down the road in the opposite direction. My friend waved and got one in return. I asked "Do you know that guy?" He said that he didn't but all Vette owners wave to each other. Hmmmm Then the other day I was watching a "Curb your enthusiam" episode in which Larry is stopped at an intersection and waves to a fellow Prius owner only to be dissed! Jeff asks him what the hell that was and Larry responds by saying Prius owners are a rare breed. Well us Maxima owners are a rare breed!

I think we should wave! Especially us 6th Generation owners!

Has anyone heard of this? I think I am going to start the revoultion! I waved the other night to a fellow 6th Generation owner on the southern state and he nodded back. Though his car was quite dirty, but I will let that slide since the weather here has sucked!

What do you all think! WAVE!

The vette wave is real. I own a 79 vette and regardless of the year, other vette owners wave at each other.

As for the max wave, I just dont think it is going to happen. The Prius and the vette, fewer on the road than the max. Dont get me wrong, I love my max and I think it is very unique, but I doubt the wave will ever happen for the max.

Sorry!

I think a precedent needs to be set and this site is just the bunch to get that done!

I implore all Max owners here to wave to each other. The 6th Generation is just the car to do it. I am crossing the country starting Monday morning and I will be spreading the Gospel!

Hahaha. I love that episode! The "wave" is real. One of my Mom's boyfriends had a old VW bus and used to wave at other VW's all the time and they would always wave back. I think it's a cool idea to start.

Well it's more like a nod or a real cool wave. You don't actually wave like Larry David did. I either nod my head or give a real conservative wave. It's more like an acceptance thing or almost like a gang thing. We are just acknowledging each other.

With over 160,000 (and climbing every day) 6th gens on the road, somebody is going to have a very tired arm. If we extended the wave to all Maxima gens, with several million on the road, I think I would have to buy me one of those battery-operated waving hands that never stops waving.

There must be fewer Maximas on the road in some parts of the country than there are here in the south (where they are a dime a dozen).

I think there may be a higher percentage of Maximas in the south than in the north. There are over a dozen Nissan dealers in the Atlanta metro area, and 23 Nissan dealers within 100 miles of Atlanta. Many of these dealers have between 50 and 100 new Maximas on hand at any given time. My dealer, who is 'small potatos', usually has between 20 and 30.

By comparison, I almost never see a Saab around here, but my niece in Conn says quite a few of her friends drive Saabs.

The 'wave' in the south is most common between pickup truck drivers, and the more rural the area, the more likely the wave. My wife has driven pickups for over twenty years, and when we are in the backwoods looking at property (for sale), I navigate (with piles of detailed maps), and she waves.

I was gonna flash the lights at a Smoke SE today. Then I said nah because he might think I'm telling him to turn off the highbeams (everyone does it to me ). Its hard to see if some cars are Maxima's at night though. The Xenon's are crazy ****ing hard to see what car it is till they pass. I love them though.

Lightonthehill,

Even though there is a big number of 6th generations on the road I feel we should begin to reach out to each other. My talking to people on this site you can tell that we are a special breed! I will continue to spread the Gospel!!!

If I'm driving and I see someone with a tight Max...I may look over give him props and just keep it moving...some people might get paranoid or the wrong impression, thinkin' u gonna rob them (thats the majority of the mentality here in NJ) people just aren't friendly like that......

Ive gotten several responses, I dont really wave so much but I hit the brights for a sec. you know, just a flash. People look and they wave or flash back. The wave is real big here in the midwest, especially with Harley's and other bikers.

see what I mean, we live in the same town. that sh*t don't work here. even if you want to do it and you try to establish eye contact the other guy will prob think "what the *** is he looking at" the wave will look something like this:
"hey man wuz up" "hey man" "*** you"

Im not sure our Maxis are rare or unique enough for the wave. The kind of cars I have done the wave in are my dads Jaguar XKE, my 89 VW Vanagon and my 1980 RX7. I recently drove a friend's Lamborghini Gallardo and I had to wave back like crazy. But other than that, as nice a ride as the 6th gen Max is, its not unique yet.

I beg to differ!

I think the 6th Generation is quite unique a car. It is sporty, sleek and has one of the best engines in the business!

I will start a craze. A cult following. Every Maxima owner will not only wave to each other but get each others back!

This girl that was training me at work had a Wrangler and she waved to someone else. At first, I was like WTF, but then it seemed ok, probably made the other guys day a little better.

Not a bad idea with the Maxis, but theres too many around me in nyc. I'd probably forget anyways. But if someone waves at me, I'll probably wave back, or give the finger if it doesnt register in my head soon enough. Either way, good times.

SeaFoamD2Max -

The reference you quote is CALENDAR year sales. That shows only a fraction of the 6th gens.

Nissan began building 6th gens in January of 2003, and began selling them the first week of March, 2003. '04s were built for EIGHTEEN MONTHS (into July of 2004), and 132,000 were built (VIN serial # 800000 thru 932000).

'05 production began in late July of 2004, and around 40,000 have been built.

So my original statement stands; Nissan has built over 172,000 6th gen Maximas, of which around 160,000 are on the road, with the other 12,000 sitting on dealer lots.

Better get your arm in shape for lots of waving!

edit - After looking again at your reference, I can't see where you got the numbers 11-12k for the last two years combined. The only numbers there for the Maxima are 86,758 sold during 2003 and 76,367 sold during 2004. Those total to over 163,000, but includes residual '03s sold in early '03, which would bring the total down 7K or so. But those numbers also do not include several thousand already sold in 2005 (Nissan is selling around 6K to 7K Maximas a month). The total 6th gens on the road is still somewhere in the vicinity of 160K, no matter which way we count it.

Better get one of those battery operated waving devices and place it on your dash.

Sorry, 6th gen might have funky styling and all, but it's not exclusive or unique.

The waves I know of: WRX, Jeep, 'vette.

Shiet, if the Max guys start waving, the Camrys and the Accords of the world might as well too.

EDIT: Yeah I was reading that shiet all backwards. But again, where are they all being sold?

SeaFoam - I think I'll move to your neighborhood, where my 6th gen will mean something. I live 3 1/2 miles (2 traffic lights) from a Nissan dealer, and am within an hour's drive of a dozen Nissan dealers. A good percentage of the cars on roads around here are Nissans. My 6th gen is just another straw in the wind (albeit a very nice straw).

To be different here, one needs a Saab, a Volvo, a Buick, a Subaru, an Audi, or a VW. Those are cars I see in abundance in some parts of the country, but not around here.

Why would people that own Camrys wave? You have to be 70 years old to drive that car!

Hey guys I am in Amarillo! Will be in Vegas tomorrow. I got to wave to a guy driving a 05' SE Silver in color on Interstate 76 in PA. He seemed to like it but was staring at the front of my car for some reason. Also his car was very dirty!

Looked like he hasn't washed it since he bought it!

The wave lives!!!
