Rotating Tires

How often do you guys do this? I just did mine and I have it at a 7500 mile interval.

Anyway, I rotated my tires and now my infamous shimmy is back at 60-75 mph. I'm getting kind of annoyed at this now. I really don't see why this should be a problem on a "Flagship" vehicle. I'm gonna take it back to the dealer and see if they can fix it, AGAIN! I really love the car it's just that this shimmy is not really helping. I mean who has the time to bring the car back to the dealer every other month or every 3 months for a shimmy problem (yes, I've been driving alot). I hope that they can get it fixed this time and the next time I rotate my tires I won't have to go through this.

Sorry for the rant....back to original question on top! ;D

sorry to hear. i guess the real cause of your shimmmy wasn't totally fixed? i hope you "rotated" by keeping the wheels on the same side and only swapping back to front? this may cause a shimmy since they are to stay on the same side (driver/passenger).
I feared the shimmy on my first rotation, thankfully didn't occur.

uh oh...i rotated the "other" way...front left going to the right rear, front right to the left rear, and the rears forward.

Well, I'm going to the dealer soon, gotta make an appointment and drop off the car. I hope I can get one before the weekend!

i suggest you rotate them properly first and check for the shimmy before scheduling.
i think u need to just switch the rears left and right. then you should be good.
hate for dealer to waste your time trying all the possibilites or dismissing you for rotating wrong.
of course it may still be there, but 5 min. won't hurt.

Nissan's maintenance schedule for the 6th gen Maxima calls for a tire rotation every 7500 miles. I try to have all scheduled maintenance done somewhere near the recommended time. I also check the pressure of my tires rather often. If I feel any hint of an out-of-balance tire while driving, I'm off to the tire shop.

BUT, I measure the depth of the tread at each groove across the tread, and do this at three places around each tire every few months. Unless I find an unusual wear pattern, I am considering rotating only every 15K. This is in part because several here have picked up the dreaded shimmy when they rotated, and in part because I have long felt tire rotation is not critical if the tires are wearing evenly.

I'm not suggesting this for anyone else, but I'm a firm believer in not kicking a sleeping dog.

I usually agree with everything "light" says on this site. Here we have to differ. I made the mistake in my previous car (Olds) of not doing frequent tire rotations. That was a mistake as the tires ended up with substantially different tread depths on the rear tires vs the front tires.

On front wheel drive cars the front tires wear much faster than the rear. For the best handling in all conditions (particularly wet roads), you want the tread on all 4 tires to be as close to the same as possible. A knowledgeable good friend of mine rotates his tires every 5K miles. But I am sticking to the Nissan recommendation of every 7.5K miles. Helps keep the tread depth as close to the same on all 4 tires that way.

At least you know the shimmy in your car is from the tires/wheels. Likely it can be corrected with a good balancing on a Hunter 9700 machine.

Like you, Light, I am also afraid to rotate. I'm currently @ 8,000 mi. and weighing my options.

I can attest to how badly the tread wear will differ if you don't rotate frequently. When I bought mine the previous owner had clearly neglected to do so for a while. But I'm happy to say that I rotated them a month or so ago and still have no shimmy.

I don't rotate, don't believe in it. I wear out a set about every 30k whether I rotate or not. I'm at 28k on the RSAs and it is time. I'm thinking Michelin. Anyone have a better idea?

michelin pilot sport a/s or pirelli p-zero nero m/s is what i really want. but you have the advantage of dallas climate. these are the only 2 ultra high performance all seasons i could find with great ratings. pirellis seem slightly better and cheaper.

if they come back in stock, i'm getting goodyear to swap my rsa's to dunlop sp 5000 Ms for free. only other tire by goodyear that meets the Max spec and are all season. my other option is to swap my 2 defective rsa's with what else... rsa's.

w/o rotating, do all 4 of your's really need replaced bluemaxx?

By tread depth, no all 4 don't need to be replaced. The back ones are *** deep in tread. You have to think months not just miles though. They are two years old now and the rubber is getting hard. They don't hold like they used to. If it was my truck we were talking about I wouldn't worry about it but a two plus year old high performance tire with 30k miles on it just ain't what it used to be.

I'm leaning toward the Pilot Sport A/S. They are supposed to be all that and a bag of chips plus they are QUIET! The RSAs are noisy and make that slapping sound on expansion joints and stuff. They were excellent when the car was new but they are past their prime.

I have thought about jut getting two RSAs for the front and trading it in on a WRX or Lancer Evo... I'm going to drive the Evo this weekend. I tried on a STI a couple of weeks ago.

smooth ride

I just had my tires rotated and balanced at 6,250 miles, and the ride is much more smooth than before. I hadn't fully realized that I had some vibration coming through the wheels before, but the recent balancing really brought out the contrast. I wish I had done the balancing earlier, but the real problem is that the tires were not optimally balanced when I drive the car off of the lot (05 SL).

Well, the dealer still hasn't gotten to take my car in. I don't have the luxury of dropping it off for the day....so, I'm still waiting. I switched the rear tires so, now I'm rotated the right way. But, shimmy is still there. If the dealer can fix this I'm not rotating anymore.

Does anyone with aftermarket rims have this problem?
