So what exactly does the limiter do? I know it obviously limits your speed, but how? Does it shift in neutral or something like that?

Once you begin to approach the 145 MPH mark the fuel will be " cut off" and the car will begin to decelerate. This is handled by the ECM.

Please post instructions on how to remove this "limiter" or reprogram the ECM. Where I need to go, going 145mph will not get me there fast enough.

the car doesn't slow down at top speed like american cars, it stays strong at 145. it just won't go anymore, but doesn't slow down..

If you pull the ECU and replace it with a buttered roll -- or perhaps one of those radio shack capacitors from ebay -- you'll not only get the chicks, but the speed limiter will no longer be a problem.

I've seen unconfirmed reports that a badger in the MAF also helps.

Not necessarily speeders. Troopers just love to look at the MAX. Everyone knows it doesnt take 25-30 minutes to write a ticket.

Where would you need to go faster then 145? To the grave! You will be dead or worse when you hit something or someone at that speed. Please let me know when you plan on being on the road so I will make sure I am not one of your casualties.

Yeah ive had mine to 135 i believe...on a concrete highway..It was stable and felt confident, no shimmy, excessive noise, and it was still pulling strong.

Since the Maxima's don't come with a built in flux capacitor, in order to travel Back to the Future, he needs to double the 88 mph speed. Effectively doing 176 mph will allow the Max to go back in time to 1955.

Oh yeah, I-10 is a nice stretch of nothingness between Houston and SA. Be careful once you enter Guadelupe County. State Troops are terrible. Haven't driven that stretch in a minute though. I got my Max up to about 120MPH on 35E outside of Hillsboro on the way back to Dallas, got nervous an backed off.

The "limiter" in my car is located just above the passenger seat, and if that one isn't working then the back-up "limiter" is located in the child seat in the rear.

I hate to sound like an old man, but please keep you excessive speeds to a track and off the public roads that I (and the rest of my friends and family) use everyday.

I was on the FL turnpike at 140 before the limiter kicked in. I dont have a "limiter" or back up "limiter" to slow me down, just the horrible FL state troopers.

i heard winter frost was the fastest...

I hit 135 last week while i was on I-95. car didn't feel as stable as others said.
03ish mustang gt wanted to play. so we floored at same time. pretty much even till 130 mph but I felt like i'm gonna lose control of the car so i quit at 135. btw srt-4 was behind us at the beginning and it was like 3-4 cars ahead of us at the end. lol

well...max is still a fast family sedan.

If you have to ask a question like that, then you wouldn't understand the "instructions on how to remove this 'limiter' or reprogram the ECM." It's certainly possible to alter the speed and rev limiters in the 6th gen Maxima, but you'll need to decrypt the code (I believe Nissan is using 32-bit encryption), figure out what it all means, alter it, and then reflash the ECM.

Companies like TechnoSquare and Jim Wolf Technologies are working on it, and they'll crack the 6th gen ECM soon if they haven't already done it. I know TechnoSquare just started offering their services to the 5th gen crowd, but only a few Org members have actually had theirs reflashed.

As much as I want to flame you for wanting to exceed 145mph (probably on a public road or highway), I am just dying to know where you need to go faster than 145mph. Curiousity is killing me. I understand why people have a need for speed. I freely admit that when I was younger, I was one of those mad speeders. I used to turn the 2 hour (for normal, sane people) drive from Lawrenceville to Carrollton into a 1-hour-or-less race back when I drove my Sentra. A friend of mine who drives a Civic would race me the whole way down I-20, and we never dropped below 100mph. At the time, I really really thought it was fun, and I was ABSOLUTELY SURE that my driving skills were awesome.

After watching my friend's Civic lose control (we still don't know why it happened) and slide across a concrete median into the oncoming lanes, I got a little scared, but nobody got hurt, so we didn't learn our lesson. We kept speeding and racing until we finally ran up combined legal fees of almost $10,000. Both of us have lost our licenses. I lost mine for 6 months, and he lost his for a year. I spent a weekend in jail and a year on probation.

He and I are both driving again, and both of us find that racing in public just isn't fun anymore. We still love our cars, and we still mod them, but we keep it legal (and safe) now. When we think of all the dangerous situations we caused, all the money we lost, and all the time we spent repaying our debt to society, it's a powerful incentive for us to go to the local drag strip or auto-x event when we feel the need to race. Oh, and our "mad driving skills" actually turned out to be pretty lousy. Getting into legal racing has turned both of us into genuinely good (and safe) drivers.

You telling me. I raced my friend in my 1995 Maxima and got pulled over, got my car towed, and my license suspended for 1 year. I had to hire a lawyer so they wouldn't take my car. Well long story short it wasn't exciting when you get slammed on the hood of a cop car. Memories i'll tell ya.

Mine does 70. Race cars belong on the track. I lost to many friends that thought they could handle triple digit speeds. Let me know how it handles when a tire bolws @ 145.

Put it on a dyno and see where the needle stops, not as accuarate as road and tracks calibrated equipment, but useful for informational purposes.

Now Now we all know Goodyear RS-A's are solid and would NEVER blow out, at any speed! But whats with these quarter inch wide sidewall splits at the contact patch?

Those splits are there to direct air away thus becoming more aerodynamic, and in the end faster.

Is this Nismo asking 'what is your mental malfunction?' to Law520? I think this whole thread, and this line in particular is hillarious. It just sounded funny, and a simple question of whats top speed has turned into a flamefest.

Presonally, I'd rather have a max with a 0-60 of about 4 seconds a top end of 100 and 30 MPGs !! Now that would be the car for me.

Personally, I can live without the 145mph top end.

Sounds like you need to look at the Brabus SLR to achieve the 4 second 0-60
it will only cost a small $685,000

who cares what the top speed is? do you plan on EVER going that fast? And if you do, I hope you get caught. There is NO reason to even think about going 145. No offense, but

It strikes me that the author of this thread asked a civil question and doesn't deserve to be flamed. He has not stated that he has a history of driving fast, nor does he state that he is about to determine if what he is told on this forum is the truth.

Consequently he deserves the benefit of the doubt. So stay off his back? Perhaps he is a law-abiding citizen who just wants to know.

Get a life!

guys, just take it as if he's wants facts for bragging rights. so when a buddy asks about the Max, he can proudly say "265, 255, 6.5, 145, etc."

I've been told/read the govenor was set at 140 for both. also told SE doesn't have one. and also told by a member that at the track he hit 150 with room to go.

play nice guys

To determine a top speed of any car/truck/SUV is not an easy task. One must understand the variables in which come into play for this question. Take wind resistance or "drag". Obviously, the faster you go, the more your car has to "cut" through the wind. This can seriously hinder the top speed of the car, and how long it takes the cat achieve top speed. Also, for example, the grade or incline of the surface you are on. Even a slight incline will affect your top speed. So there is no set "top speed" for every car technically.

In a preferably flat and enclosed area with no wind resistance would be where you test your top speed. (Ideally) but since none of us have this option, we can't say for sure. However, if you want your stock specs from the dealer, then this thread has answered your question. I hope that you did not take my words in my previous post to heart, but in many cases people do stupid things, and in many cases the end result is a crash. Drive safely, and responsible.

IMO The car SHOULD hit 160 because thats what the speedometer goes up to. And, I mean, can't a stock Z hit 155 or something? Just sounds like the motor is capable of it, but look at it this way, some U.S. BMW's and Audi's with more Hp than the max are limited to an even lesser speed.
