Bike rack question...

Does anybody have a bike rack, roof or trunk mounted, on their 6th gen? Im looking into buying a new mountain bike and rack. Im kinda new to the whole biking scene so please let me know what kind you have and if there is a good online site that I can order one from. Thanks.

I have a yakima roof rack system for my max. They have lots of attachments - everything from kayak holders to different bike rack systems - check out www.yakima.com. It is a little more pricey than other systems, but most will tell you it is far superior!

You need to ask yourself how much biking do you plan on doing. I have had a roof rack for my last two cars. If you are the only one with a bike then I would say it's safer to go with a roof rack. However, I have carried several friends bikes around. At one point or another someone will end up dropping the fork onto your roof and denting/scratching the hell out of the roof. I would opt to go with a trailer hitch style rack. Way less chance of the car getting dinged up from a fork. You can always go the roof rack route and make sure you are the only person to use it. This way you can only blame yourself.

Another thing to note about the roof rack. It will create "stains" on your roof where the rubber feet supports meet the roof. These will be very very difficult to buff out. Again another reason to opt for the trailer hitch. A trailer hitch setup will run you about $300-$400 with installation. a roof rack can be found for $100 less.

If I end up keeping the car for any length of time I will plan on going the hitch route.

I've had the same $50 bike rack for the last 9 years. It's been on my Pontiac, Jeep, TL, '00 Max, Murano and will soon be put on my Max in just a few short weeks. And I've never ever scratched a car with it. So while I don't know how exactly it's going to fit the Max, I'm not too worried about it.

I only transport the bike about 20 miles for a ride, but once in a while I drive a little further for a ride. Usually twice a week (wed and sat) so I'll put the rack on Tues night and take it off saturday afternoon. Of course, the bike is tied down well and the tires are strapped down tight to prevent the pedals from rotating into the bumper. It would be nice to invest in a Yakima or Thule rack, but for me the simple trunk rack is fine.

Those cars are fugly enough without a roof rack. I would never consider putting a roof rack or a bike rack on any Maxima. Either drive the car or ride the bike but don't put the bike on the car is my recommendation. Put the bike on a friends POS car if you can!

Don't be mad that ur driving a 95 max, i was once there to. But for us who go to the skatepark, the trails, the mountains, it isn't around the corner and a rack is the easiest way for transportation.

Why is this cat even on the 6 gen discussion if he hates or think the car is so ugly.

rmurdoch listen up and go to the hate it or love it thread and quit being so elementary.

Get at cha boi.

I don't even know why I'm entertaining these lames, guess I'm bored.

Let me go put some miles on my Radiant Ember 6generation Maxima.

And enjoy the shimmy, the misaligned glovebox and every other problem inherent with the 6th Gen. I am a member in good standing and can go to any forum I want on this Board and if you can't stand the heat, then get out of the kitchen.

I can sympathize with you 6th Genners who have encountered problems but don't give me any of this holier than thou, primadonna BS!

Out of respect to our wonderful 6gen owning moderators, I'll let you have this one.

But really, look at yourself in the mirror and ask yourself, "why do I have soooo much burning a hole in my heart HATE for this car I don't own."

I'm done, my hands are in the air, it yours

Don't take it personally boys! There is an old saying that goes "to each his own." Personally I don't much care for the appearance of the 6th Gens and I apologize to any and all owners who take exception to their pride and joy being referred to as "fugly." I just wouldn't bother putting a rack of any kind on that car if I owned it. I would buy a beater, put on liability insurance, and drive it like I didn't own a bolt in it with all the skateboards, snow boards, bicycles and whatever strapped to it, dragged behind it and stuck in the trunk. As I said... to each his own.

And my staying with a 95SE is my choice. It only has 57,700 miles on it and has no mortage on it, lol! Oh and if you want to get more evidence of what I'm talking about just go to the Canada forum and see what the two 6th Genners are pulling their hair out over - a shimmy the dealers have thrown their hands up in the air over.

I've got both the OEM rack and the Yakima. I've had a hell of a time getting the Yakima to fit right. I think it might be a matter of fine tuning the system. Dunno....going to work on it this summer.

No thanks to those certain "thread jackers". I ask a simple question about a bike rack and some people just can resist the temptation to throw in their worthless opinions.

Thanks to everybody else though. Im probably not going to go with the roof rack since I wont be biking as much (at least for now). Plus it looks like a lot of pieces will come into play with the roof rack and Im a litte uncomfortable about putting things on my roof like that. Im gonna go with a trunk mounted rack. One question though. I also own an 02 4Runner, if I use a trunk mounted rack like the pic below, will it also fit on my 4Runner?

Thats the safest way to go. Though I have been toying around with the idea of buying an el cheapo Walmart 4x7 trailer and welding up some square tubing to it as a kayak/canoe carrier. Never scratch or dent the roof of my cars ever again. Only downside is the trailer hitch peeking out of the back end of the car.

You and your nice 10yr old car

Andymax has more $ invested in his rims than you do in your car, go back to your own forum, stop eyeing up something you dont like and couldnt have anyway.

CanadianMoFo,

How does the OEM rack stack up to the Yakima? Can you attach your Yakima (or Thule?) accessories to the OEM?

yea it will, all you have to do is adjust it to fit level on the back of your suv..

Nope. The OEM bars have a flattened oval cross section to them. Some attachments that are made for a universal fit may work. I only thow a kayak up there from time to time. I have some foam blocks that are cut with an oval section to fit over the bars and a v-section up top to cradle the kayak.

The OEM bars are much more low profile. They only sit about 2 inches above the roof line. They make less wind noise than the Yakima racks. I'm not sure if there are attachments available for the OEM bars at all. You could try a rack specialty shop and see what they reccomend. www.rackattack.com

I got the OEM rack because Yakima was very slow in getting out a fit kit for the 04's.
