Nickel in my armrest power adapter

I am at work posting this, so I dont have a picture to explain the issue. But, we all know there is a second power (cigarette adapter plug) in the armrest area. A while ago, I somehow got a nickel stuck in there. Its amazing that a nickel is the perfect size to get stuck in that adapter.

My front adapter (passenger sidewall) is currently not working either. I have not checked the fuse box, but I am sure that fuse is probably shot.

Anyone know of a good way to pull that nickel out of there. I can't seem to get anything in there to nudge it out, and don't want to damage the plug.

JB Weld?

Here is an idea. There is a metallic adhesive/repair compound called JB Weld. It comes in two separate small tubes and then you mix them together to chemically "fix" the compound (similar to some epoxy preparations). You could prepare a dab of JB weld, carefully dollop some on the nickel, then plant a wire with a small hook in the end to embed in the soft compound. When it is hardened, you should be able to pull up the nickel with the wire. This stuff is strong (JB weld), I have seen it used on fairly high pressure hydraulic pump housings on farm machinery. You will want to be VERy CAREFUL not to spill any on your car anywhere but on the nickel-or the cure will be worse than the disease. Good luck!

Fold up a piece of duct tape. Ya know sticky side out. It should pull it. Dumb ? but have you tried a mechanics magnet? If all else fails you should be able to pop the entire outlet out far enough to unplug it, then empty it..

Put superglue on a pencil eraser end, touch it to the nickel, let it stick good, and pop it out. Should hook you up.

When I was in high school they had some light sockets that pointed up in the hallways, although they didn't have any bulbs in them... it's was my friend's bright idea to throw a quarter in it (it just barely fit) and watch it arc as it shorted the fixture. I'll be they had a helluva time trying to find that one...

Anyway, I'd try some duct tape or something... maybe some sticky-tac even?

use a little force and flip the coin, then try using a fork or similar tools to take it out.

solder?

Another idea is that you could solder a nail to the nickel, then pull the nail out with the nail after the solder has set.

Not sure if I mentioned earlier, but this is not just a simple "nickel fell in the hole" type of situation. At some point, something has pushed the nickel into the socket. It is not just sitting there waiting for something sticky to grab on to, it is "lodged" in the hole.

I will report back when I get to work as to what happened when I got down to the car.

Well, tugged and tugged this morning, and nothing. the bolt that I had the JB Weld on stuck really well, but with the tugging back and forth, it disconnected from the Nickel. I have the bolt, but still non nickel.

Drill a hole in the nickle, and put in a screw to pull with.

How about this:

1) Dont take the nickel out.
2) Keep putting more and more nickels in the socket.
3) Once you've filled it to the top, take the whole socket to the bank
4) If the bank asks, just tell them you ran out of paperrolls and this was the only thing you could think of to hold your stack.
5) Use the cash you get from the bank to buy a new socket.

If the above doesnt work, just *** it and buy a new Max!

WD-40 or 3in1 oil too?

Too bad the JB weld didn't work. Perhaps you could put a little wd40 or 3in1 oil too (in addition to a re-attempt at the JB weld. Another thing (though I'm not sure how you would do this) would be to cool the nickel (so it would contract) and/or heat the socket (so it would expand).

I also like the idea of a pilot hole with an eye screw. Then you might be able to get some needle-nosed pliers or needle-nosed vise-grips on the eye bolt (use a long eye bolt).

Good luck!

Hehehehe.....sometimes you guys crack me up.

Funny thing is though, most of the times, the posts are so slow on this forum.....we all try to help and are infacuated by a nickel falling in a strange spot, at least I am. LOL, hope he gets it out though.
