Ok, who dropped the ball on the 6th gen sunroofs?
I have a 2k2 gle that I plan on trading in for a 2k5 with 10-20k on it (Or maybe new If I can find the right price).
Ok, so its funny the things you look for in a car. The 2 items I cannot live withOUT*edit* are 1. a power moonroof, and 2. radio/cd controls on the steering wheel.
Now of course (Cannot live withOUT) maybe going a little over board....But If im paying on something for 60 months I want to be completly happy with it...
anywho, car shopping this weekend and I could not find one used 05 with a power moonroof. All of them had the pointless see through roof. Honeslty, what is the point of that thing? Didnt people b!tch after '04? I cant believe they left that in the '05s. Will it be in the 6ths? Now if it opened it would be another story.
Sorry for the vent, but I cant believe someone got paid to create such a moronic "feature"
I feel better now.
Agree/Disagree?

so you should be happy the standard roof is not power.
It seems no one thought it necessary to explain to you that instead of a "regular" roof, the Max comes standard (no charge) to have a glass panel. If you couldn't live without a power roof, you buy one with the power moonroof. Most dealers order them with it to get the extra $900 for it.
Sorry to read you "cannot live with" steering wheel controls. Then just don't use them.
So I am kinda confused by your complaints, but I love my power sunroof and steering controls, so I'll have to:
Disagree.

Is neither option palatable to you? Please clarify.
I thought I couldn't live without a moonroof and a sun shade (which I have in my other car), but I seriously don't miss them on my Maxima. And hell, if I had wanted the power moonroof I could have gotten it, but I wanted the Smoke/Latte instead (got mine late in 04) so I picked it off the lot.
I personally am glad I have the skyview vs a regular moonroof... they are so unique, everyone loves them, although yes, everyone does ask why they dont open... but who cares, when someone passes me in a truck or big suv, they are always looking over at it, wondering what it is!
I'm with Christ. I have the skyview and it's totally unique which is why I wanted it. I'm not a fan of sunroofs, T-Tops or convertibles. I prefer to look out and that's it. If I wanted to feel the wind I would roll down my windows. The skyview is a conversation piece. Everyone has questions and would like to know more about it. I guess it's not for everyone though.

Wow, a little hostile in the earlier posts....
yep made a typo this morning and it should of said cannot live withOUT...,
Not attacking anyone for having a skyview just cannot make any sense out of why you guys like them....To each his own I know...
This is a message forum, just trying to help the work day along....Sorry for stepping on the skyview-fan toes.
I do agree they are very unique looking and when the 6ths gen came out a year ago Nissan made sure the commericials featured them but also made sure to "avoid" the fact that they dont open.
Great Great idea to be unique and as some said conversation pieces, I just can't for the life of me figure out why they wouldnt make them open.
Probably some more typos in here so have fun.

Well i dont mind having the skyview in place of a solid roof. It adds to the spacious feeling of the car having some light coming from the top of the Max, also looks neat when looked at while in the back seats. And i think it looks nice. Serves almost the same purpose as skyview windows in homes.

The Skyview makes the inside of the car more roomy and is uniqe, I have had nothing but compliments, plus I take it too and from work daily and since I wear suits and ties all day, I choose not to bake in the hot sun moving in urban traffic. If I need a powered sunroof, I'll drive my Chevy Trailblazer LTZ. Overall, I luv the skyview best, however to each is own...
Is it just me or am I the only one who likes my SkyView roof.....I never really liked the sunroofs......hated them when they jammed. I would rather get a base model that came with a free skyview...then a car that came with a solid roof. Not like I paid anything for the skyview. It is a nice conversation piece for me as well. I like it anyways.

Has anyone TINTED the SkyView? I do love it though and to be able to open one or the other. It is pretty unique though....no leaks with mine.
Like ya Skys
I think your Skys are pretty good , but still like my Sunroof for lots of reasons but a couple being you can tilt the back up and leave that way to keep the car cooler on hot days and secondly you can have a have a lung torpedo in the car and the smoke just floats on out the roof...
Yes I am a dirty rotten smoker ... my secret is out ....

Any room with a view will look bigger, and the center line area where the skyview is located has about 2 inches more head room, hence, more roomy.
A sun roof has to retract between the the outer roof and inner ceiling, thus takes up more space...
I think you get the picture.
That is true, if you look at the spec sheet on the Nissan Maxima at the Nissan website, you will see that you have more headroom with the skyview than with the sunroof. That is another reason I like the skyview.

Carcus makes the best point when he points out that the skyview is not an option you're paying extra for. It's an interesting feature that they put on at no extra charge for those who choose not to pay extra for (or just don't want) a moonroof. While I enjoy my moonroof I also think the skyviews are very appealing-looking. Not only from inside, but also from the outside.
As an aside though, I'm somewhere around 6'3 and have no headroom issues whatsoever with the moonroof.

It's personal preference. I hear ya man. I wanted a solid roof or a power roof. I didn't like the skyview look. As for the controls on the wheel. I never had them but now it's a must too. The only option I had to have was Nav.
Seems as if a lot of folks here did not major in physics.
If the skyroof were to slide open, where would the glass go? It obviously can't go forward or backward very far. And if one looks closely at the shape of the roof, it is clear the glass can't go very far to either side, either. So it has nowhere to slide to.
As for just 'opening' vertically, the only way would be to have the thing hinged at the front and open an inch or two at the rear. And that would require mechanicals and electronics and a newly designed internal water drainage system, and would add a chunk of money to the base cost of the car.
Most importantly, should the shape of the car have allowed room for the skyroof to 'slide' open, a power skyroof would require mechanicals and motor and electronics/controls and other such stuff.
Although years of experience have brought the price of the power moonroof down below $1,000, a ground-breaking power skyroof woud probably add $1,500 to $2,000 to the price of the car, and also take away headroom the entire length of the car.
Nissan fans should be joyful the designers of the base Maxima, given a choice between a skyview roof or a plain metal roof, gave us the skyroof. FREE.

The previous question of "What does SL vs SE have to do with" this question of SkyView vs Sun Roof is right on.

iclrod - In case you may have some doubt lingering after several posters here responded that the SE vs SL situation is not involved, there is no difference whatsoever between the SE and SL roofs.
They both come with standard skyview (exactly the same on both SL and SE), and both can be bought with optional power sunroof (exactly the same on both SL and SE). Some folks call the sunroof a moonroof, but whatever we call it, it is exactly the same on both SE and SL.
