How to determine Build Date

Can any1 inform me on how to determine the vin date. I know with BMWs the date was on the inside door sill but I've checked there, can you determine it by the VIN # or is it located somewhere on the car?

TIA......

HPSE - Nissan began building '05s in mid-July of '04, and had built over 10,000 by the end of August of '04.

If you would also like to know where your car fits into the '05 assembly run, the last six digits of your VIN are the serial number of your vehicle. For each of the '04 and '05 Maxima runs, Nissan started with VIN serial 800000.

So, for instance, if your '05 Maxima has serial number 810000, it was the 10,000th '05 Maxima built, and was probably built around the last week or so of August, 2004.

Sometimes newly assembled Maximas leave Smyrna fairly quickly, depending on whether it is 'optioned' in a way that matches what a dealer has ordered.

But, sometimes, they sit in a parking lot at the factory (where thousands of new '04 Maximas were badly damaged by a terrible hailstorm in May, 2003) for awhile.

Still, I would bet your car has been on dealer lots for most of the past year. I say 'lots' (plural) because it is common for dealers to swap vehicles when either they have trouble selling a particular car, or another dealer is looking for a particular car.

----------------------------

edit - I obtained the beginning date for '05 assembly from a Nissan site last summer. Knowing the Maxima assembly line averages around 7,000 vehicles per month, and knowing they began the '05 Maximas with a VIB serial of 800000, the VIN serials should have reached at least 802000 by the end of July.

But PaL379, in a post below, has a VIN serial of 800604, with a build date of August of '04. That does not 'square' with the info Nissan had on its site last summer, nor with the fact my dealer was receiving '05s by August 8, 2004 with VIN serials over 802500, and had 22 '05s on his lot when I checked on August 22, '04.

Surely Nissan did not just slap August build dates on the '05 Maximas built in BOTH late July and all of August? If nobody here has a build date of 07/04, then that is the case. I would find that somewhat surprising. But not really a 'big deal'.

Well my last 6 digits are 800957 so I guess I had the 957th 05 so does anyone know when they made the changes to the steering rack for 05? Mine had to be in the first few batches of 05???? When test driving some newer 05s on the lot on Friday I noticed tighter steering and the automatic shifting on the SE models seemed less eratic? Just my .02 cents.

I believe it was at 2-3 thousand. I will ask my DTS if I get the chance.

In view of the info in PaL379's post, I have added remarks to my post of a day or two ago. They begin with the word 'edit' in my post above.

I am trying to find a correlation between build date and a transmission lever. My 05 Max is dated 8/04 and numbers are 800947; also a Red Opulence but with a manual transmission.

Does anyone know where I can find out about part changes; specifically about the transmission?

thanks

You might call your dealer. They should know.

Also, my number is 819449, so mine probably has what yours does.

Since there seem to be those who wish to know the exact day their Maxima was built, I will repeat what I posted last December in the thread referenced by tubells in the preceeding post:

'At the very bottom right margin of the big window sticker that comes on the left rear window, in very fine print (a magnifying glass helps) is a long series of numbers and letters. After the first few letters, my window sticker has this sequence - 20040529.'

'I already knew my SL was built the last week of May 2004, and realize those numbers represented either the assembly start or finish date, or some sort of bill of lading date that immediately follows the assembly process. As a result, I consider my SL to have been built Saturday, May 29, 2004, which was on the Memorial Day weekend. And yes, assembly lines would probably be running that day.'

'Take that for what it is worth.'

Immediately following that post, ocuihs posted:

'at the bottom of the rear bumper between the dual-tip exhausts, there is an inspection sticker stating when your Maxima got inspected. Then off they go onto trucks, trains, etc for deliveries to your local dealers.'

'it generally takes 10 business days to build these awesome machines from this inspection date.'

Some comments about the two posts I just quoted:

I think ocuihs meant to say it took 10 days PRECEEDING the inspection date to build these awesome machines. They can't be inspected before they are built.

His mention of ten days on the assembly line probably includes from the time a Maxima is set up in the computer, and preparations begin to get all parts meeting at the assembly line at the correct time, to the final rollout of a finished Maxima, and is probably pretty close to reality. So the dates we are finding in obscure places on our Maximas might be the start date, the finish date, or not exactly either.

But at least we are able to put our finger on a few dates that are probably close enough to be considered 'assembly day' dates.
