No one buys a Maxima as an investment. Its a car to drive and enjoy owning or in my case "renting". My suggestion to you is stick to the 4th gen forum. No reason to come in here and tell us how dumb we are for buying new cars. I really hope no one takes your advice or lack there of seriously.

Fine, great, I'm out of here. Hopefully, one day you have something to show for yourself other than a high-mileage. nearly-paid off broken down Maxima, lol! But I know your parents are proud of you and were happy with your decision to mortage your future.

Do you think that my first option sounds too good to be true? I'm probably going to start there since it is only 30 minutes away from where I'm located.

$20,995 sounds good to me, especially with leather. I'm going to call today to get more specs on the car.

I too have had none of these issues -- and still have the original struts at 38 K miles, with no indications of a problem. Bought mine in May of 03 and love the car. I did have to change the crappy OE tires early (at 32 K miles). Love the new Michelins, and the car does too. Also, I have not had a shimmy with either the Goodyears or the Michelins. So there are good 04s out there. Try a test drive of the used 04s to see if there are shimmy problems or strut noises.

Bobo you talk alot for a guy thats 2 generations behind. So i guess your calling all the 6th gen members dumb? In life when someone does well for themselves they like to spend a little here and there. I would never call it dumb buying a car for under $30,000 where the avg price for a new car now and days is like $25,000. Yes thats $5,000 more but that is quality and many upgrades over a avg camery or car. If you want to hate on someone that is doing much better than you in life fine, but dont be disrespectful and call all the people buying new cars dumb, because your dumb *** would never have a used car if it wasnt for me buying it new.

The shimmy is noticed when are up to highway speeds. Somewhere between 50-70 mph.

if you check the TSBs (in a Sticky) and few major Problems (in a Sticky) you'll know what to look for and what to avoid. Take the car up to 70 mph to check for Shimmy.

I also have an 04 with no concerning issues. remember, all car come with some problems. it's what you can live with or wait paitently to get fixed that matters.

GET IT NOW!!!! that price seems too good. like I said check for the shimmy and ask what TSbs were done. even print out some and take with.

they'll see you're knowledgeable and they can't pass anything by you, taking you seriously.

damn, I'd get that and add coilovers, RSB, RedlineMax kit, tint, mesh grilles, rims, Pilot tires, and still be under MSRP.

check to see if it's 4sp or 5sp tiptronic if that matters to you.

def. get a warranty, but shop around. they compete for that too. do a carfax for extra assurance (shouldn't be needed).

I welcome any donation for the money/hassle I just saved you since you now have more knowledge than I had gettin one.

When I called, the dealer did mention the extended warranty. Do you think it's worth it? I still have to find out the price, then I'll decide... But I do feel confident that the VQs can go around 300k miles or more with the proper treatment.

Have you ask them for service records? If the car has any warranty work done, they would have the records. I'd take the suggestion of a good test drive and really check out the the engine and trans, as well as struts, brakes, and shimmy. I understand you want blk/blk, but don't tell the dealers that info upfront. Drive a few cars, even beand new ones, to compare. The extended warranty is just an insurance, you may never need it. Carfax the car you want too, just incase.

i guess my info isn't wanted
extended warranty is worth it to me. you get a rental when work is done, towing to a dealer, oem parts, and just about bumper to bumper warranty for entire term.

see if you can buy miles like 30-60k miles from now, b/c the 70k would be a waste but 100k may be okay.

w/ a used car, I would get it. your original warranties are expired. any TSB you find after you buy it comes out of your pocket, unless you have them fix them prior or with your ext. warranty.

edit:
remember what I said, you normally don't have to buy the ext. warranty from the same dealer, they will compete. not sure about this car since it's expired. you may have to get it there. check elsewher first.

When I bought my Prelude used I got a warranty right from the credit union I financed through. It was a bumper to bumper including towing, rentals, everything. The car had 44,000 miles when I got it and the warranty was for 5 years up to 100,000 miles. I paid $1200 for it and I think I got the moneys worth out of it. I had the timing belt/auto tensioner replaced and that alone more or less paid for the warranty. With that Maxima being 100% out of warranty I'd really look into this option.

Check with AAA they sell some good extended warranties. You get alot of the same benefits that you get from the dealer. The companies do compete heavily for ext. warranties. Some will ask to inspect the car to make sure it is in good running condition.

You might want to wait a couple of months when the 06 models are more prevalent at dealers and all the 05's have been cleared out. It should make the 04's drop in price a bit since it will then be a 2 year old car.

If you are going to buy a used 6th gen. Make sure you get a service history of the car and a carfax. All new cars have problems. I have 49,000 miles on my car and have been lucky not having the problems some other members have had. Not everyone' 6th gen. has problems. I had leased a car once and wanted to keep it but they wouldn't go down on the price. You cant mod it and at the end its not yours. If you have business a lease is alright. The dealers get you with the no down payment and low monthly payments.

The final move is up to you.

Little disappointed...

I don't know I have just traded a Toyota that was four years old and had never been back to the dealers. I bought a Maxima and love it but will be taking it back to the dealer to take care of several comedic defects. I'm sure they will get resolved but @ 900 miles I am a little disappointed, normally you expect these from a American automobile??

The maxima is an american car. It's made in TN, I believe.

Correct -- built in Tennessee by farmers. Even the new Toys have to go back to the dealers to fix things. Your earlier car was either a great exception, or small things don't bother you. Most on this site are ****-retentive and want everything about their Max just right.

I bought a Silver/Blk SL. I love it.

I paid $17k and yes, I did see all the records from the previous owner. The previous owner is a 50 year-old real estate agent (female).. So I guess that explains why she averaged 30k miles/year.
She has been a loyal NISSAN consumer, from the same dealer for the past 10 years. And no, this is not a lie since I met her yesterday while she was trading that Max for the new Murano. She was a nice lady who seemed stressed from work.

The car is in good condition, except for two door dings on the side. I drove it at 70mph for about half a mile on the highway and there was no evidence of shimmy. Interior is in MINT condition. But I do have a question:
When you turn on/off the engine, do the steering wheel readjust? or is that just for the 05s and up? The '04 didn't move at all when I was exiting the car.

The engine was running smooth and quiet. I did not hear anything when I turned the engine on. After reading all of her service records from the dealer, it is evident that she has kept her Max in good shape.

I could have bought the SE with less miles but I couldn't resist the features of the SL. I did miss the manumatic which the SE offers. As far as the "wood grain" interior, I think I can live with that.

Overall, I am happy with my purchase. It just sucks that I have to wait a week to pick it up. I appreciate all of your interest in my search.... although Bobo did help this thread reach 3 pages.

I did not purchase an extended warranty. I will look into the AAA's option.

[QUOTE=minsbang] When you turn on/off the engine, do the steering wheel readjust?

I am able to set-up the steering wheel and seats on the SE model, I don't think that you can do it it the SL. Check the drivers side door and see if you see 3 buttons that say set-up, 1 and 2.. Good luck with your ride.

Sorry, what I meant was if they electronically move by it self. I remember when I turn on the ignition on the '05s. the steering wheel adjusted itself.

so you have the 4speed auto. that changed mid-04. check your settings. she prob. had the wheel assist turned off. check the sticky in How to for Personal Setting adjustments. that will give you atleast an hour of fun customizing everything.

you can also have the seat slide back upon entry.

there is nothing the SL doesn't have that the SE has. only possiblity is if you don't have the DPP, which I believe is an option even for SL.

Sorry I should have typed it different, but thats what I meant.

You have to have the Driver Preferred Package, for the the memory function. It remembers your ideal settings for driver's seat, steering column, and mirrors.
Check your manual for set-up instructions if you have it. you can do 2 set-ups. Its very easy

but he's talking about when you get in the car, the wheel lowers itself. i'm thinking you may need to have the memory settings, but not sure. Is Entry/Exit Assist a DPP only feature? with all the options he stated, it seems he has this fucntion. how to change this setting is in the sticky since it's left out of the manual.

also, if you make a seat/wheel adjustment while the car is off, the wheel will no longer lower.

Memory funtions are not standard on the SL or SE its part of the driver's perferred package. What happened to your sig., its upside down? I quess you can't sleep either. I am going to try to sleep after I answer my E-mail. Good night
