Speedomter question
Speedomter question
my cousins 2004 maxima auto was stolen they found his car a week later. anyway they took his speedometer. I wanted to know if he buys a used speedometer to replace his will the miles on the new speedometer be recalibrated to the cars mileage?
The speedo shouldn't matter... he needs to buy the gauge cluster and trim (I think they sell them separately). Since the odometer is digital, it should be a matter of plugging the connector in and driving away.
I think.

I think.
The dealership will be able to ADD mileage to the speedometer/guage cluster. My friend at Ford has to do this often when those sorts of things break down. Apparantly Ford is quite picky about the procedure to prevent the dealerships from rolling back odometers by purchasing new clusters. I'd immagine Nissan is the same way.
Of course if he's installing it himself he'd be unable to roll it forward so effectively it may just be at zero to start now.

My guess is that it's probably the same way with the Maxima, since people wouldn't know if the odo has been rolled (unless you get to the onboard computer
).

Check with Gec on this issue as he is going to be swapping out clusters that changed to blue LEDS, he should know if it will affect the mileage. I don't think it should since the computer holds that information and it is just displayed on the LED odometer.
Maybe Gec knows who stole the cluster, it may be how he's getting his "parts"!!!
Just kiddin.

how did we go from "Dealer can adjust the mileage" to no it's impossible????
call a dealer to see if they can do this for sure. (which they should)
so what, you have to throw your car away if someone steals your odo???
or what if you have an electrical malfunction? you just have to demolish the perfectly good car or go to jail?
please if you do not know for a fact, and only going off your assumptions, please add so and not post inaccurate bs.

there ya go, order the part online and/or head to your dealer for install. insurance should pay minus deductible.
Having had to exchange an odometer cluster recently on an '04, I can tell you WITHOUT A DOUBT, Blake is correct. IF the ECU is storing mileage info, it is doing so as a duplicate effort of the odometer. The mileage is stored in the odometer.
