what mileage are you getting?
what mileage are you getting?
hi guys. i need your help here. in the two months i've had my '06 my average MPG has never gone past 15.6, even though i use octane 93 fuel all the time and i'm 80% of the time on the highways. i understand speeding and using the A/C reduce fuel economy, but it still seems to be way under the sticker numbers. yesterday i saw someone's navigation screen showing 21.4MPG on a picture they posted, and i would like to gather some data before i go in for my appointment on wednesday at the dealership.
so you post what your average mileage is please. thank you!
mine right now is 15.4

Mileage will be affected due to break in period also? how many miles are on the car and i dont go by what the comp says i do it the traditional way by recording mileage and tank fill up and im getting 22mpg and have 19k on my 04 with 93 octane and im in s florida like you so the humidity does affect it too plus having 20's doesnt help but you gotta pay to play
When I first got my 06 (6 speed Man) I averaged 20MPG mixed city and somewhat open road in the DC/VA area. Traffic is no joke if you are familiar with the area. Now I get 24 if I don't press it too hard and 22 if I gun it a lot with the AC running. I have averaged about 26 with a tank a few times but I have never taken long distance trip yet. I am sure it will get near 30 on the highway. I have almost 4K miles on mine now. I use 93 only. You will also notice different gas stations will give you better mileage with the same octane level. I don't know the science behind that one. Something must be wrong if your getting 15 MPG break in or not.
i know this may not apply for the 6th gens, however i checked out the sticker on an 06 and it was 20-28. My car being a 5th gen stickers at 20-26, and i average around 23-25 on the highway in the detroit area (mind you this means im doing 80+ most of those miles). when i trek down to Cincinnati I usually tank up on V-power and can get 31.5mpg (I-75 averaging 65-70mph) the A/C at MOST seems to only affect it about 0.5-1mpg. Best Milage yield for me seems to be if i use Shell V-Power (93oct) and keep it right at 70mph (this is 2600-2800rpms on the tach depending on the terrain and A/C usage. MY suggestion is if you're doing mostly highway and you're getting poor fuel economy that you should take it on a good 100-mile drive and watch your RPMs. my car really doesnt drop down to 22mpg unless im averaging 3k on the tach. If you top off before and after this journey, check how much fuel you put back in. If it still works out to 15mpg, you might have a bad oxygen sensor (my dad's caravan had this happen; the thing accelerated like a ponycar but the fuel milage was cut in half)
Deff something wrong with your car, I've been checking my mpg since the first tankful 27 mpg [local/pky 20%/80%], returned from a trip last week, N.Y. to N.C. & back 1700 miles, avg. 27.9 mpg, with over 220 miles of up & down local N.C. mountian roads, with down hill 2nd & 3rd gear engine braking, the rest was 55 mph state/county roads, and Interstates at 65 to 80 mph, AC on all the time. And I only babied the car for the first 900 miles, Total miles now 9,800.
well that definetively confirms what i had thought. i already have 3,300 miles on the car and i have never gone past 15.6MPG even when first bought! if i go fast the difference is about .2 MPG down whereas it takes me a lot of driving slowly to get it back up .1 MPG. thanks for the feedback guys. i'll try resetting the trip computer, but even if that's wrong, it still feels as if i'm getting poor fuel economy, pumping gas way too much 3-4 times a week at oct-93, which isn't cheap! btw, most of the time my AC is off and i'm still on the stock 17" wheels, no added weight to the car (yet)...
thanks guys!
thanks guys!
I do almost exclusively city driving - I get around 21 mpg. In my rare highway trips I can see the trip computer gradually changing to better mileage - it's probably able to reach 27-28, which is not that far from the official specs.
I hope it helps....
I hope it helps....
its pretty wierd i drove in SA for 2 months and never went down past 23 MPG but here in houston it doesnt seem to go over 20.0 usually i get around 17 and 18. same type of driving as in SA.
i get 30+ on hwy alone. unless the lead gets heavy....
avg 20-22 mostly city though.
do you accelerate hard and brake much?? your driving style reflects mostly on your mpg. plus as others stated, hold your MPG button in to reset it. and do the math yourself to see how many miles u make on the next full tank.
i try to always roll to a stop or time redlights/stop sign lines. keep the RPM below 3k and watch your MPG increase drastically.

There is nothing to worry about. I had the exact same problem with my car for the first 7,000 miles. I drive mixed use in the VA Metro Area and when i go to school in arlington about 60 miles round trip all highway i do about 30+ a gallon. City i dip to about 22 a gallon. on avg i get about 350 miles a tank. Over the winter i still was getting terrible readings like yours, but as the temps warmed up the car milage got up past 10k i have really noticed the gas milage picking up greatly. So dont worry everything will work out i just think your car is adjusting it just takes time in a few months u will be ok.
I have over 45 K miles on my 04.
Nismo has some good advice so I won't repeat it.
I get 21-22 mpg for in town driving.
I get 26 to 30 mpg for highway driving.
If I keep the RPMs below 3 K, I get closer to 30 mpg.
All of this while burning regular gasoline (85 octane here in the mountains).
When on the highway I burn the cheapest branded gasoline (which in Iowa, Neb and Kansas is mid-grade with ethanol).
You do need to reset your computer every time you fill-up and then compare the computer reading with a manual calculation of your mileage. I've found that my computer is quite accurate, but you need to check yours.
As others have said, your mileage should improve when the VQ engine is fully broken-in (about 7 K miles or so).

I have an 04. I have, since the day I purchased the car, average 20.5 in
city, and 28 on highway (average speed 80mph +) During city driving, I have a heavy foot.
I would definately have your car checked.
Good Luck

It all depends on your driving habits. I tend to "step on it" and so I pay the price. Riding hard in the city with A/C 16MPG, Riding allright in the city with A/C 18-19 MPG,
Highway. Taking it easy 27-33 MPG, Contstantly going 85-95 mph 22.7 MPG.
I don't know how people get over 20 MPG in the city. What do you call a city? Come to NY and drive in Brooklyn a little and see your MPG fall drastically.

On my way to Maxus which is right at 400 miles for me, where i had my car loaded down i got 29 mpg,...and still had like 60-80 miles left before the low fuel light came on figuring it the old way,... the computer said only like 22mpg.
Having a lead foot kills your mpg,... think of it this way,... most things you punch the gas for aren't worth the amt. of fuel that you waste on them.
City 15-17 (WOT half the time) DC metropolitan area, Hwy 24-26 (65mph+ outside large cities). Economy went up recently (was 14-16 in city) after I switched to AMSOIL in engine and Power Steering. Engine noise down noticeably.
well i tried resetting the computer and wow the mileage seems to have changed a lot. it went all the way up to 25MPG and now it's at 22.x so if that's true i'm happy
lets see what it says by wednesday when i go to the dealership :-)

Is this one of those cities where you guys have no trafic lights and next block is 14 miles away????
Quote city if you constantly drive local streets with traffic lights. City means stop and go.
If you get 26.5 MPG city you should be doing 35-40 on the highway. If thats the case and I don't think its possible do you ever get over 1500 RPM and 40MPH ????????

and/or "did you ever try to do the math yourself?"
how's a guy supposed to know that you can reset it? they can't expect me to read the manual!
although i did read it more than once and never did that pop to my attention...
oh well, now that's a little bit better. they'll still have a look at everything to make sure it's all a-ok. it's free anyways

I was averaging 21 mpg at 3K miles. It slowly went up to 23 at 9K, then jumped to just under 25 when I switched to Amsoil for 20K miles. It dropped to 24 when I switched to Mobil 1 this spring, then recently went up to a clean 25 when I added my CAI at 30K. All driving is 75/25 city/highway, fuel is 93 octane (almost exclusively Mobil or Exxon), and I drive like a freakin' psycho!

IMHO there is a difference between "in-town" mileage and "in-city" mileage. If the city has terrible traffic and a "stop-and-go" light at each corner, you will get even worse mileage than you will in a town where, on occasion, you can cruise for blocks at 35 to 45 mph before having to stop. That second describes how driving here is -- normally.
I've got 150 on the clock and pull 21 give or take in the city. The mileage will always get better as the engine wears in and you can eek out better mileage by being very careful with the pedals. I have still not adjusted to the throttle on my max.
Avg Gas Mileage??
i have an 06 max se..averaging between 15 and 16 miles per gallon. the thing is that it always shows this though premium fuel used. i was wondering how much your cars were showing when you push the button to check mpg?? thanks guys.
As has been mentioned previously in this forum, if you do not reset your mileage readout to zero everytime you fill up you will not get an accurate estimate of your mpg. On a recent 1200 mile trip I averaged 29,26,30 mpg per tank. I believe the mileage varied due to weather and traffic congestion.
There is already a thread on this subject that will probably answer all your questions. With a 50/50 mix of highway/city, I average 24.8 mpg. If I aggressively drive around town, I have seen 17-18 mpg. At 55-60 mph, I get about 31-32 mpg (6 speed manual trans.). At 80 mph, it drops to 27-28 mpg.
