2004.5 Maxima SL
2004.5 Maxima SL
Here's a question for the group. I've got a 2004 SL with the 5 speed auto tranny and manu-matic. It's also got VDC.
Is it a 2004 or a 2005 for resale purposes? KBB does not have a 2004.5 category (think first year of previous Pathfinder design).

I have not seen the '4.5' designation used with the '04 SL with 5 speed tiptronic. But I know of no law against such usage.
The '04 SL with 5 speed tiptronic tranny is still officially an '04 for resale purposes. The model year is legally determined by ONE THING, and ONE THING ONLY: the VIN number. There will be a '4' in the 10th character position of your VIN. That means your SL is a 2004 model. The contents of character position #10 of the VIN overrides everything else.
Assembly of the '04 Maximas actually began in January 2003, although none were shipped to dealers until the first week of March 2003. '04 SLs were assembled from January 2003 until February 6th of 2004 with four speed automatics. From February 6th 2004 until the assembly line for '04s stopped in July 2004, all SLs were built with the 5 speed tiptronic tranny.
So there were five months where all '04 SLs were built with 5 speed tiptronics.
There are many folks who think all '04 SLs are 4 speed autos. That can make selling an '04 SL with 5 speed touchy. When selling, I would emphasize the fact your SL has the highly desirable 5 speed tiptronic tranny.
For price books that either list the '04 SL only as a 4 speed, or do not differentiate between the 4 and 5 speed auto trannies, I would definitely demand a slightly higher price than the book states if I were selling one with the 5 speed.
edit - And I would also make sure potential buyers know your SL has the very worthwhile Vehicle Dynamic Control stability system, as well as a full-size spare tire on matching alloy wheel. Only around 10% of '04 Maximas had that combination.
