Competition is Heating Up
Have you guys seen the new Acura TL Type S? It has a 286HP motor. I hope Nissan is noticing this while desinging the 7th Gen. There going to need a Max with at least 300HP to compete with Acura, Toyota and the new Mazdaspeed cars.
Ya, i've looked into this one with my sister. The $39,000 sticker price is kind of too much if you ask me. The tail-lights are to "ricy" for me, because they have the altezza look. And the wheels look like under-sized Altima SE-R wheels. Other than that the whole interior is amazing!
Voice-activated everything, paddle shifting mode, navigation, and so on.
Visual wise, i'd take the 04-06 TL and just put that Type-S performance into it.

The G35 is a great car, and was included in my short list (Max, TL, G35, A4). But the G and the A4 are somewhat different animals that may or may not fit a particular persons needs.
As far as comparing to Honda (or Toyota, for that matter), they are great appliance cars but are not in the same class as the Max. The Altima is a closer competitor for the Accord or Camry, but the Alti has way more character (although the '07 Camry is getting closer).
My twin sister bought the 06 Mazdaspeed 6.
She loves it. She really likes the giddy up it has.
I'm not feeling the Bose though. It feels a little shallow. Maybe it's the lack of insulation????
After driving that, I still love the Max. I'm not hating her, just not feeling it. It's a little too plasticy to me! The Max, just screams of luxury to me, with a good bit of pep!

The base TL vs. Max is a very fair fight. The TL-S adds another dimension to consider, but it is still closer in overall characteristics to the Max than it is to the G35.

Well said!!
We don't compare max to accord because Honda doesn't make a vehicle in the same class. Camry and Accord are in the same class as Altima. Max is in the same class as a TL. Its as simple as that.

I think the "R" max should include 6spd M/T, NISMO wheels/suspension/exhaust/cams and other than that......keep the exterior somewhat the same, so that people won't know what just butt raped them!

one thing acura tends to do better than nissan is get the whole package right, not just the hp, but the suspension, handling, brakes, and polish...
I still would go with a rwd 6spd '07 g35 sedan over that tl any day

hate to say it guys...as much as i love maximas and really hate to see this happening, but nissan is pulling the maxima out of the performance direction and into the luxo area. at least our new altima v6 will have 270 sae corrected hp.

The TL-S is essentially a factory modded car and your point (comparing to a modded Max) has validity, but the street price differential is not as large as you quote for same year, similarly equipped rides.
Maybe the TL-S will prompt Nissan to bring out an "R" Max.

I see that they offer dual exaust for both 4 and 6 cyl, and 6sp also. thats cool..
what I'm asking is, its probably the same car, just a few things different maybe..

As logik05se said earlier in this thread (and as has been discussed on the ORG since the '07 specs came out), our beloved Maxima is headed more in a 'luxo' direction than a performance one. Or more in the direction of the Avalon than of the TL-S.
Its niche in the Nissan lineup is sort of being replaced by the ever-improving Altima 3.5, which not only has an 'R' performance version, but will have an assortment of NISMO mods to play with. The Altima is actually quite a lot of car for the money, and very reliable.
I feel Nissan plans for the Altima to be the car for middle and upper-middle economic level families, with versions to suit almost every taste, probably hoping to sell around 250,000 units per year.
The Maxima will be Nissan's flagship, will become even larger, plusher, better-appointed, and will be aimed at the near-luxury area. It will have strong performance, but no more than 300 HP, and no longer be the traditional '4door sports sedan'.
I would guess it is aimed at both the Avalon and even some Lexus buyers. Nissan will probably hope to sell around 100,000 units per year.
And it will almost assuredly be CVT only.
In the 6th gen Maxima, we are witnessing the first step in the metamorphosis of a fierce wasp (earlier Maxima gens) into a big butterfly (7th gen Maxima). Many traditional Maxima fans will not be happy, but I feel the 7th gen Maxima will probably sell very well, drawing new customers to Nissan.
At least that is what Nissan is hoping.
