18's vs 19's

18's vs 19's
Is there a big difference in performance. I mean i would prefer 19's but does 1 inch really matter that much? Keep in mind im going more for performance. When i decide they will be wrapped in Toyo proxes T1R's or the Nitto N555's. Please i welcome any and all opinions.

In my opinion 18s are the perfect size for performance. They are lighter, all things being equal, which means better acceleration. I dont believe 19s improve the handling. The 19s do improve the look. I chose 18s for performance as well.

Weight has a lot to do with it as well. When i went from 17's to lightweight 18's, almost everything was better - acceleration, handling, mileage, reaction to sudden steering input.
However, when i went from the OEM 17's to even heavier 17's with heavier tires, the ride, mileage and handling suffered quite significantly.
To add, 19's are almost always never done for performance reasons. I vote for lightweight 18's.

With all things equal (type of tire, type of rim, same diameter overall *tire+rim*)--the handling will improve due to the 40 profile tire contrasted with the 45 profile tire. This means faster turn, better feel of road, generally more responsive in terms of handling.
Everything else suffer...
ride quality
gas mileage
acceleration
braking
wear & tear
abilty to remain balanced
choice of tires

I just made a choice to get my 18's on my car now instead of 19's or 20's...
Everyone says to me " Your rims look WAY tooo small... "... i hear this atleast once a week , if not more. Im going for perforamnce just like you.
maybe its cause' my rims are black w/ a poilished lip.
EITHER WAY ... i like them ..i love them...
Go with what you want and feel is right for YOU!!!!

All you guys who mention poor gas mileage are not entirely correct. The key is the overall diameter of the wheel/tire setup. I just switched to 19s with a 35 aspect ratio and they are actually smaller in diameter than my 18s with a 40 aspect ratio. Granted they are SSRs and are also very lightweight but nonetheless, A larger diameter wheel doesnt automatically mean slower and worse gas mileage.

ok i found out the weight of my rims its 21lbs each, im not sure if thats light or average. The tire size im looking at is 245/45/18, is that good, or should i get a different tire size with the 18's?
#12
Il be going back to 18s and switching back to a spring/shock setup eventually. Just found out my wifes pregnant again so I aint gonna be buyin no G35. The ride quality is definately worse on 19s, I'l miss the look but ive always been about performance so if I pick up some lightweight 18s im sure it will outweigh the visual aspect.
#13
If looks are important to you, try finding a set of 18's that have no lip. Lips usually makes the wheel look smaller than it is. My old set of 17" ASA AR1's looked like 16's to most people, while a lot of people commented that my 17" Moda R6's looked like 18's.
#15
im not a chrome guy, but the color matches pretty well. So i pretty much made up my mind on the size of rims. Now what size tire should i get? 245/45/18? Oh and the rims i want have no lip......so 18 will look fine.

Bro, listen, go with 255 if your rims are wide enough if u can. 8 and 8.5 should be fine. You get a nicer contact patch and more solid foot print.
The T1R is a nice tight tire. Its pretty solid and holds up very well to abuse. I beat it on the track..... and on the street I drive my car like I stole it. I'v had this car hit the speed limiter on thease tires going full out and I felt I had lots of control left, cant say that for the tires that come on the CrownVics. LOL (RSA I siht you not, 235/55/17).

Nice, the other option for tires are the BF Goodrich g- Force T/A KDW NT tires. BF's on the top and Toyos proxes T1R's on the bottom. If u guys have had any of these tires plz give me more info thank you. Ive read the reviews there pretty much dead even. Except the toyos got a better rating for overall tire from 1010tires.com I would rather get comments from you guys that have the tires on the car i currently have.....

BF is a nice Tire. Toyo is a nice Tire.
BF is amazing in Heat. Toyo is amazing in the rain.
BF is used by Chernmax for 1/4 times.
Toyo is used by Kamski for technical track.

If you want performance or ride comfort go with 17s.
If you want good looks, go with 19s but they may slow you down a bit and ride will be bumpier.
I wouldnt bother with 18s, ride will be just as crappy. And they are almost as heavy as 19s.

Im not so sure about how noticeable the performance will be (18" will be better) but I do know that tires cost considerably more money in 19" and so do the wheels, so for 1" more be prepared for spending a considerable amount more.

Eh.. if you really listen then yes maybe they are slightly louder than your typical not-as-aggressive tread design all season tire. But, is it worth the performance they offer?........... heck yes
