New Tires

245x45x18's are very very expensive. However, I found these Continental ContiExtremeContact's at a very good price and am wondering if anyone has ever used them for the OEM application. I plan in the next year or so, getting new wheels but it's not looking good in my quest to downgrade wheel size to get a little more comfortable ride. So i'm figuring, stay with the 18's and get rid of these god forsaken Coopers. While they corner nicely, they just aren't nice to me on NY roads.

My 07 has Goodyears on it, and they seem noisy, even for performance tires. How are your Coopers for road noise? tommyturbo2

Also, who carries the Continentals you commented about? What was the price on them? tommyturbo2

I have those tires. Came with the car when I bought them. Very good dry and wet traction but not as good as potenzas for example. For the price you cant beat them. However they are absolutley horrible in the snow, so watch out for that.

The Coopers are ok but the ride is extremely rough. Especially on NY roads. I don't really hear any noise because to drown out the bumps, I turn the radio up really loud.

As far as the Conti's, TireRack had them for $131.

I just put a set of contiprocontact...i think..on my car for winter, they are quiet and drive very smooth. They are OEM on BMW 3 series. The set cost me $800 installed at a local tire dealer.

I was going to get those Conti but I went with Nitto 555's instead and I love those. The tire is soft and it has a really fat curb protector and its quite.

The tires on my 19s are those or the conti2s, cant remember. They have excellent dry and wet traction and are pretty smooth and the price was VERY right.

I have these as well. And I agree, they're great. Way better than the RSAs and cheaper!

Anyone has those highly rated Avon tires on TireRack?
The OEM RSAs are just crap. All NYPD cruisers have them too.

I think that the 6-Gen Max got a reputation for being a bad performer in snow because of the RSAs (and other tires like these Conti's). I too thought the car was not good to drive in snow and we would take the 4-wheel drive pickup truck when there was snow on the roads.

I replaced my RSA's with Michelin Pilot Sports (quite expensive) at about 30 K miles in June of 05. (The RSAs were not worn out but did not perform well, were very noisy and were showing some signs of cracking).

Then in early May of this year (with about 25 K miles on the "new" tires), we were unexpectedly caught in a spring blizzard in eastern Colorado. It was near white-out conditions with the snow blowing horizontally across the road. With the Michelin's and a good pair of light-colored polorized sun glasses (like light-colored ski goggles), we got through this blizzard just fine. As my wife commented -- all you see on this road (when you can see anything) are pickup trucks, SUVs and semi-trucks -- there are no sedans (other than us). But the Max performed like a charm and got us through on a road that was closed to traffic at each end (while we were driving on it) due to the heavy wet blowing snow.

With the right tires the 6-Gen Max works quite well in snow. My experience in this blizzard proves it.

That's what really boggles my mind. The RSAs are $50-80 more, per tire!

Don't go there. I had those and had to throw them out @19Kmiles. They were quiet 'till then and out of a sudden getting so terrible. I balanced/rotated them every 5Kmiles. The tread still looked real good and even. It was so loud that every time I released/applied the gas, the noise winded up and down. Even my BOSE couldn't stand it.

Well i'm taking her in Wednesday to have the tires swapped in the Goodyear recall. All 4 of mine have cracks.

I'm going to be looking for Michelin's if they have them and if not, Conti's. They are the best for the money , well the Conti's are. The Michelin's are just the best from what i'm hearing and reading.

I would hate to have to shop around for free tires ...

I doubt if Goodyear will provide you with any other tires in a recall or replacement program -- other than those made by Goodyear or one of their sister tire companies (I believe Dunlap is one that qualifies).

I agree. My Pilot Sports have been great -- particularly in snow -- where the RSAs performed like crap.

I spoke to someone that said the dealership i'm going to will give me whatever I want as long as it's worth it to them. We'll see and i'll repost after I get my tires.

This is the first dealership that has said anything about replacing bad RSAs.
The standard dealer answer is to "go see Goodyear for any tire problems."

That's what you said in your first post. And my comment still applies --
most dealers just send you to Goodyear.

Not sure I understand. I got a letter that my rsa's are being exchanged for free assuming they're cracked. I called G'year dealer and he said he'll swap.

You are implying in this note that you can get Michelin's or Conti's in "the Goodyear recall."
You will get Good Year tires -- probably replacement RSAs.
Elsewhere you were saying that the Nissan dealer would do this --
now you are saying it is the Good Year tire dealer.

I have a 04 max with stock 17" rims and need to replace my tires I have been on tirerack.com and not sure what would be the best all season tire for my stock rims for the NY location. I am thinking of getting something wider then the stock size, any suggestions?

You should have said in your question that you are looking for replacement tires for your SL. I happened to notice this is what you are driving by your "signature."

I don't have any experience with SL replacement tires. I'm also not surprised you want a somewhat wider tire -- which was the first clue you were not talking about an SE (which about 75% of people on this site drive).

I got 4 brand new Bridgestone Potenza RE960As at Firestone for $999 installed and with free tire rotations. WAAAAAAY cheaper than buying the crap RSAs again.

1. Let me start by thanking you on your ridiculous reply which has nothing to do with my question.
2. If you would have read my question it clearly states I am looking to replace my current tires.
3. if you are too ignorant and want to assume that I also have a SE instead of an SL that is your misunderstanding.
4. I don’t think I asked you how many people on the ORG drive SE.
5. FYI in the future if you can add any knowledge to a post it would be highly recommended to keep your stupidly to yourself.

Thank You!!!!!!!!!!

I'm glad you believe that all on this site are sharp enough to know that you drive an SL -- given how many drive SEs on this site. Be content in your beliefs. But note the reply just after mine about replacing RSA tires -- the poor quality tire that Nissan put on SEs.

If you are not more specific in your questions, you will get answers that don't apply to your situation.

I'm so glad you know what you're talking about. A Goodyear dealer gave me Conti's. Thanks for your help in this matter and you have a nice day.

Where on the RSA's do the cracks first appear...near the tread or closer to the rim?

In my case closer to the tread on the inside of the wheel. You have to look very closely as they are very easy to miss.

Hi everyone!

I am currently shopping for tires and decided that Falkens 452's should be on my list. There are Nankangs but I have not heard anything good about them other than their price. Hankooks are out there however they are not as good as the Falkens. Continentals are one of the best bang for the buck however they are hard to get up here in Montreal. It looks like I will have to drive down to Plattsburg and do some shopping especially now that the Can dollar is almost at par with the US. Currently there is very little stock up here which is weird.
