Car stalling when shifting to first gear....

Hello my friends...

When I use the sport shift and take her from second to first gear when slowing, I have this pretty mean stall. The car will have this long stall from second to first. Maybe about 2 seconds. And when the stall hits, it feels like the egine is about to fly out the bumper. I know there is no need to shift to first when slowing down unless its racey time lol

Does anyone have the same issue? If so, what can it be and what causes it?

You don't shift to first unless you are <5m.p.h. or RARELY <10m.p.h.

If you down-shift to 1st in the exact spot that it will be red-lining (about 25m.p.h.) A LOT, then do not expect the transmission to hold up much longer.

You may also want to check the trans. fluid and possibly change it.

25mph?? my redline in first gear is about 40mph... and I shift into first a lot... but I've got a manual tranny, so ....

I used to shift my old automatic Firebird into first all the time to slow down... tranny was still going after 200k miles, and I beat the crap out of that thing... broke the tranny mount a few times cause I was so rough on it.. of course, that tranny is probably twice as strong as ours, but still....

If you are engine braking on an automatic tranny by using the manual-shift option, you typically don't go lower than 2nd gear manually. On most Euros I've driven, dropping from 2nd to 1st gives a pretty hard jolt. The jolt is hard enough that I quickly learnt to let it shift from 2nd to 1st by itself.

+1 on what everyone said...

try not to ever shift into 1 from 2... sooo bad for tranny

Get a 6spd if u plan on doing this for sure or that pretty max will be chilling on the bed of a tow truck

Ya, my bad, I was thinking one thing, and typed another.

After experimenting with MPH/gears, I found the best sweet spot is at about 25-30m.p.h. in first gear. From a stop I leave it in 1st and just slowly cruise up to that speed and then BAM, I even get chirppage sometimes

But redline in first is in the same range as yours I believe.

Any stalling would be a concern of mine.

Are you throwing any ATCheck light?

Stalling makes me think vacuum leak, but I'm no mechanic. Do you still have warranty? Any left on your 5year/60,000 miles? Take her in. Also, be careful in shifting your car. I love the tiptronic, but I am so nervous of being rough on her, so I won't run her hard too often.

No check light at all. I just started noticing this. Yeah I rarely shift to first unless some dude wants to have a run against me. But the jolt is seriously scarey. Its like I have to brace my body cause I know its gonna hit hard. Yes I still have the warranty (I think) lololol My shift from second to first will allow me to at maybe 20-25mph and thats while I am breaking. But other then that, maybe around 15mph. Its weird though, cause If I use tronic and let her shift auto, it will shift to second at around 35mph. So whats the deal with that? Man I am destroying my baby!!

Doesn't cost you a thing (other than time of course) to take it in and have a mechanic ride with you. I'd want to show them what's it's doing. I can't imagine why you haven't thrown any codes yet. This seems like something that would trip a light of sorts. Makes you wonder if there are other times lights should show up and they don't.

Yeah good point there. I think while I am there I will request a flush of the tronic fluid and get it replaced withwhatever the OEM stuff was.
