Idea for modifying rear valence
I have seen these little rear air diffusers on the rear of some cars and I think 2 or 3 on the rear of cars with the Stillen body kit might look really sharp. Maybe even cars without the body kit too.
Here are pics are a 2007 Kia Rio SX Concept that shows what Im talking about.
Ignore the fugly car its on. If anyone can photochop this on to the back of my car just to see, that would be great.
Here is a pic you can use:
Any thoughts, good or bad??

This car is closer in design to our lower rear - the Audi TT-R

Actually it does serve significant performance purposes. Here is what the rear diffusers on a Ferrari Callenge Car do: According to Ferrari factory specifications for the Challenge Stradale, these diffusers (underbody spoilers) substantially increase negative lift (downforce) and provide improved stability at speed. And here is a Subaru site with info on diffusers:

Im sure this is for higher speeds, but the same can be`said for rear spoilers; they dont work at high speed but they are really for style. I think if it is tastefully done, it would not be ricey. If they are body colored, or maybe black on any car, and not to large, they would add a bit of aggression to the otherwise plain rear.

Take an air drag measurement on all these devices that fight air flow from the other direction. It all equals out to be drag. Get your front down with spoilers and you don't have to worry about the *** end. Nascar, Indy and Top Fuel dragsters have rear wings but they are going 190, 240, 330MPH. I be willing to bet you're not this fast. Any car can benefit from front downforce to help keep it one the road but unless the car has ****-poor design, or you can reach the above mentioned speeds you really don't need to waste your money, unless it is all for looks. Which there is nothing wrong with. I love a car the looks good, nice body lines. etc. Not all cars have to profess to be race cars just because you have modified them in some way.

Im trying to figure out how to make the lower diffusers like in the photochop pic. I'd like to see a silver max with the same tail light treatment as in the photochop except make the lines silver (body color)

its for an STI. when i look at it, its way too long. i think the best way is to cutt off the section that has the exhaust hole and then cut off the one all the way to the right to fit the exhaust.
you can most likely use this one too. just cut a hole on the other side.

Yes it would definitely look nice, but you can't necessarily relate the ferrari challenge cars to the maximas. Yes the diffusers will improve airflow under the body of the car and such, but the aerodynamic gain isn't worth the money unless you smooth the entire underbody of the car, which if you do incorrectly will actually provide lift and make the car unstable at high speed.
it all depends if you want to do it right (non-rice) or half *** it and rice it.

I don't have a Ph. D in fluids, but I can tell you that the diffuser has to "reach" back into the car a few feet to do anything. You need to control a certain amount of air under the car to produce downforce. It needs some walls on the left and right and needs to slope upward.
The photoshopped pic of Dues' car earlier in thread shows a very poor example of how to make a diffuser. That one would be just for show. I know we are just trying to get a feel for how it looks, but you know .
Look at the underside of race cars, like F1. I think the F1 site shows some general pics of this.

I agree to some extent. I think most of the diffusers on street cars are for show, much like spoilers and other ground effects too. If they were effective, it would only be at highly illegal speeds, maybe speeds of 100 mph and greater. The technical proper effect of a rear diffuser is to evacuate air from under the car into the high pressure zone outside the car, thus creating a "sucking" effect and providing stability and traction, especially at high speeds.
If you are looking for a functional diffuser, it would look rather cumbersome on our cars I believe. There may be a minimal effect with the smaller diffusers, I dont know either. My doctorate degree isnt in fluids either. For me, I like the look, and if I get a bit of smoother air flowing out from under my car, then all the better.

I made the mock ups out of cardboard and then painted it black. I followed the curve of the piece next to the muffler. Now I have to figure out what material to make the actual pieces and how to attach them. THATS the hard part. Im up for suggestions.
