Spare tire
Spare tire
For the first time ever I decided to look at the spare tire. I found pennys and dimes along with a pin sitting underneath the spare. I always had rattles that you could only hear standing near the trunk with the boss speakers. Oh and that trunk mat must be at least 10 pounds.

Goodness! Do we have a dereliction of duty among Maxima owners? I pulled my spare out as I was making the final pre-purchase checkout of the car in order to confirm the wheel and tire were exactly the same as the four that came on the car, to check the sidewalls for any defects, and to confirm there was around 34 PSI in it. It actually had 39 PSI. I know what it is like to have a flat in a deserted area in the middle of the night, pull out the spare, and find the air pressure around 10 PSI.
Other than the tire, wheel, fibreboard cover, and the apparatus that holds the tire down, there was nothing in my wheelwell. Not even a leftover Easter egg.
Having a full-size spare with matching alloy wheel is exactly what I wanted. But the tire sticks up an inch above the level of the trunk, which is annoying, and which makes installing and removing my compartmentalized 5 ft wide cargo system awkward, with the middle staying bowed up even after it is in. I would imagine the full-size spare on the SE, being 245 mm wide, would stick out even higher than the 225 mm wide spare on my SL.

Yes, light the SE full size spare stick up quite a bit. I kept one of my wheels when I changed the rims just so that i have a full size spare. I wouldn't want to find myself 200-300 miles away from the city and be limited to 50mph on a donut.
xoomer - I'm like you with the space-saver apare. I much prefer a real tire.
I will admit those space-savers are 'better than advertised'; I see fruit cakes driving them 80 MPH on the freeway, cutting in and out of traffic, totally oblivious to any recommendations as to their use and limits.
If I had to use a space-saver on my Maxima for more than a fairly short, low-speed trip, I would at least try to limit it to use on the rear, even if that meant doing a double switch (if the flat is on the front, replace a good rear tire with the donut, then replace the front flat tire with the good one from taken from the rear).
I would do that because (1) the weight on the front tires is is twice what it is on the rear tires, (2) the front tires do all the steering, (3) the front tires do all the pulling, and (4) the front tires do most of the braking.
But that is just me . . .

Lightonthehill, I have a friend who about a month ago had a flat tire on his A6, So the guy ends up racing someone on the highway and we hit a bump and the tire came off the wheel and rolled right buy us. and we are pointing "oh man someones tire came off". It was hilarious but then that was proof enough that those tires arent strong at all.
