i'm thinking of doing this mod tomorrow and i have a couple of questions:
1) what type of sand paper should i get for this?
2) will the dust from sanding get into the sealant? does it make a difference if it does?
3) how do i make sure the sealant wont get painted on? tape it off? will the tape stick to the sealant then?!
4) what exactly do i have to take out? on the original poster's thread i saw a cable still attached to the housing when he put it to bake?! is that safe? i should get as much as i can out of the housing correct?
5) lastly, once i'm done, i put it back to bake and that will soften the sealant so i can just press both parts together and let it cool/dry? if i'm to do this, how long do i have to wait before i can go driving?

please answer as much as you can, i definetively want to do this mod i need to start and finish in one day and so i dont want to encounter any problems while i'm in the middle of things!

That looks really good. I think paint matching the headlights is a really good clean look. The c6 corvette pulls it off really well.

What color are you looking for?
Krylon Fusion, is available at most automotive stores, homedepot, lowes, local hardware stores, amazon.com, but usually only in black or white.
If you cant find that brand, your best bet is to sand the plastic, use a adhesive promoter type of primer, then finish w/ color.

Looks good, the true test will be if you can avoid condensation in the lights.

When you paint the housing black, your sidemarkers will appear a little more of a dark orange. (not by much though).
I believe others have used the spray tint on the reflector itself.
On a condensation note, I've had mine opened twice, once for paint, then later for halos. And also helped another member here do his paint and halos, and none of our housings have gotten the condensation.

I just did mine yesterday. It was a PITA! I got it right the first time but wanted to touch some parts up. That's where the trouble began; the paint started to ruin and I kept getting fish eyes. I finally got it straightened out. I do notice what looks like specs of dust on the clear plastic inside the housing especially at night with the lights on. It looks like I may have to open these lights back up to clear that out. Anyone have any ideas? I really don't want to open them up again.

My passenger side HID lens is hazy (yellowish) compared to the driver side. I'm surprised considering that I put each HID unit in a plastic bag. I'll have to open them back up tomorrow. Does anyone know what cleaner I should use for the HID lens?

bman1986: You'll do fine. You might want to bake the painted peices for a little while before putting the unit back. I though mine had dried long enough (3 hours) but I still got haze. Spray light coats; by doing this you lessen the risk of the paint running.

You don't have to put it in an oven. If you are unfamiliar with the process, I suggest you buy a heat gun and get the job done. It's much easier, much safer. No worries about melting unwanted parts.

Sorry bro, you're right. Well, using a heat gun to heat the edges of the headlight itself will make the glue soft enough to let you pull it apart. Now, this is safe, as I did it on my 2000 maxima, and it didn't take me that much time either. Just keep it away from your children or younger siblings. (This thing gets hot in the blink of an eye) I didn't keep track of time at all (sorry ) Less than an entire afternoon. Painted and all.

I, however, ran into problems as of last night. I have my new max (05) and I tried to paint the inside of the headlights, but I couldn't get pass the unscrewing of the following things... Please provide some input as I'm out of luck... I never would of thought I would run into a wall, especially because I already did this on my previous max.

Here are the pics:

Do I leave that in there?

How do I take that apart?

and that?

I know there's gotta be a ton of things I missed, so feel free to tell me so...

Just unscrew the HID balast and you can unplug a wire from underneath to take that out. Then take all bulbs out, leave everything else in. The wires wont melt.
Search the backside of the housing for 2 really small screws and get them off before heating up.

MaXXXpower, thanks so much for that info, I was finally able to take it all apart. Once I find my camera, I'll upload pics and everything. I must say, Other than a few mods I had to do in order to make this work, the end result looks phenomenal!

Does this work on the 02? And what paint did you use? Sorry, nevermind. Computer was being screwy, got my answers already. This looks awesome! How much you think a heat gun costs?

The heat gun is $20.. you can get it at any hardware store. Just look in the paint department. You can buy the paint at any auto parts or autozone store. Use semi-gloss or flat to get little to no reflection from your headlights. it costs around $6. Yeah, it'll work on the 02 model.

Hey guys. I did this project and have a yellowish hue on passenger side HID projector. I though it was the projector but is actually the bulb. My question: Is there a way to clean the HID bulb itself? I really don't want to spend $164 at the dealer for a new one or have to replace both bulbs to match. Thanks for your help.

I dont think you should have to go to the dealer to get a new one. More than likely, it's the fumes of the paint that are projecting the yellowish color. My advice would be to take it apart, and wait for it to clear out.

BTW make sure you seal it properly. I didn't do so with one my headlights, so I had to do the process again. Except for the painting part.

If anyone wants to see step by step pictures, PM me. Mines came out great!

I have taken it part before about a week after to clean the projectors since they had fumes on them. The driver side if fine. I think the fumes got on the bulbs. I used a lens cleaner to clean the projectors. I just wasn't sure if I should use a lens cleaner to clean the actual D2S HID bulb. Any ideas on a substance to lean the bulb? I was thinking maybe rubbing alcohol.

Yeah, This post started over 1yr ago, I've re-done them a few times. Cleared them, now they are painted black.
Here's what they look like this week....

Thanks guys.
My next lights are probably gonna have the amber going vertically up the side and a white strip (like the ones in the bumper) going horizontally.

Hey Maxxpower how easy is it to add that yellow led on the headlights? also are they connected to the headlights or to a separate switch?

Thought about it. But there isn't enough room for larger bulbs. Would have to build up a housing and it would get in the way of the headlight.

If you can open up the headlight, you'd be 75% done. Attach the strip w/ 3m double sided tape, tap into the wires for your turn bulb.
