Problem with my 04'

Sunday night i attempted to merge with the express lanes on the highway (giving it some gas) and something happened.

My car stopped accelerating and started making a thumping noise (i was traveling around 100km at that point) so i let of the gas and started coasting for a bit (obviously ****ting my pants), ......the thumping stopped

...i gave it a little gas again (now to get myself off the highway) and it started accelerating np but only up to 80km's, after 80 it started that weird thumping again.

...So i kept it under and made my way off the high way and into a mall parking lot just off the 401. Only now, i could barely accelerate from a stop.

...i got into the lot and started making calls to my buddies, we were going to Van Halen and we need to make other plans for a ride...before i turned my car off i put it in "Tip" mode and saw that the trany was just sitting in 5th.

****!

I turned the car off, let it sit....then tried to start it up again after a short while. It worked normal again and i got her home. I took it easy the whole way but i noticed the idle was acting a little rough on occasion during that trip.

Is this my trany dying already? My fluid looks good and i've been regularly servicing the car at the dealership. Or maybe it's a MAF problem?

It's sitting at home waiting to go to the dealer but i wanted to ask the "real" experts on here what they thought first. Any help would be great.

Thx

I have had the exact same problem with my 04 Maxima with 45k on it. I have taken it to the dealer as well and they told me that nothing came up on thier computer to show that there was a problem. I took a test drive with them as well and ofcourse the problem didnt happen to them. So now i am on the 5th week that i own the car and im on the 6th time it has happened to me. Tomorrow i am taking the car in again because it stayed in 5th gear in the middle of an intersection.(lucky me) I dont know what i am going to do if they tell me that there isnt a problem. If you find anything out about yours it would be great to hear what i can do to make the problem go away. I will also keep posting about what is goin on with mine as well.

SIlverfox just called me today and told me that it was his crank sensor. He had the '5th gear lock' like you did.

How do you fix that? Can you just reset the TCM, or do you need a new sensor? How much?

Dealer issue. His was covered under the powertrain warranty. He told me that he didn't look over the bill, as it wasn't on his dime. I believe they replaced a sensor. I thought he said something along the lines of "crankshaft sensor"..... (does that even exist?)

Crank sensor eh? Thanks very much 4MySwee. Any help is much appreciated.

...would this also explain the wild thumping i was getting when trying to accelerate above 80kph? It was thumping away.... and totally gutless.

Also, to TheChadb3. Did you encounter this thumping im talking about?

I did hear and feel the thumping in the gas pedal when it was about to throw itself in 5th gear. From what i have experienced the many times it has happened was when i drove it alot it would do it. Driving all the time stop and go made it happen most offen. If i was on a long trip it didnt do the shift it was when i turned off the car for a few, got in ,drove it and reapeated that a few times was when it happened. I am going to talk to the dealer about the "crank sensor" tomorrow and see what they say about it. Hopefully it is covered under warranty, Ill let you know as soon as i do.

Please get a hold of Silverfox04 at www.6thgenmaxima.org

He was the one I told you about his car. I would hate to misspeak and the problem not be rectified.

So i just got off the phone with the dealer that looked at my car about the 5th gear problem and yet again they said they can not find anything wrong with the car. They drove it for 27 miles and it didnt do a thing. No codes came up showing there was a problem with the car and everything ran great.

Now i get to drive it until it happens again. Lets just hope that i wont be in the middle of an intersection again.

So far My Maxima isnt a fan or me driving it but after i drove the rental i thought, DAMN are we Maxima drivers SPOILED!!! lol

If you find out any info I would love to hear about it!

WTF?

..and you mentioned the sensor? I'm not around until Friday so i wont be able to tell you what happening with my dealer until then. They've been pretty good to me in the past (kinda) so we'll see what i can twist out of them.

Thanks for the update Chad.

Also i am a member at 6thgenmaxima.com and will be getting in contact with the person you suggested.

Thanks again 4MySwee
