Mack, I think it depends on the mods. Stock, I was faster off the line. With CAI I was slower off the line but way better up top. Especially once I got the car above 4k rpms.

I am really surprised that midrange is winning so far.

HAHA quite a few varied posts here. And what's up with you guys posting in the dog@ss slow category. C'mon!!!! I agree with Fastmax, Kevin & the others. I think it's pretty obvious this car has more ***** on top-end but interesting to see everyone's opinions here.

My personal experiences are, I had a 2000 Pontiac GTP (supercharged) before this car, my buddy had a 5.5gen and I could easily smoke him from light to light around town, but if we got up above say 30 to 40mph+ he would blow by me fairly easily. Both cars were 100% stock. I still feel as if the maxima is slow off the line stock & with mods but the high end for me just pulls so hard. But again, interesting to see everyone's take here.

The lack of technical data in this thread makes my head ache.

It's a valid statement. If my ECT's and IAT's are high, I get a slight lag, if they're(IAT/ECT) just right, it's insane, if they are too low (closed loop, rich AFR) it's **** poor until 4000RPM.

What I stated essentially adds technical and qualitative value to your particular statement.

I will you then. My car has an attitude, and it is dependent on IAT's and ECT's.

Wait, I thought the 3.5L sucked at high RPM? Now I'm confused.

LOL seriously though, Nmex, I know you need your daily dose of technical data and background but I was just curious of peeps personal experience and feel for their car. While FAR from technically correct, this poll is very interesting to me none the less.

What you missed was the fact that we were talking bout initial 'flooring', which means off the line. It doesn't matter, because what I stated stands for ALL RPMS.

Nmex, you DO realize you speak a foreign language to about 95% of the peeps in here right? Again, I respect your mizzy knowledge, and maybe even respect your 21k+ posts (avg 8 posts per day since inception) status even more, but good lord man you gotta break it down into laymans terms for us lowly peons.

car pulls like a ***** off the line... mid range power is great also tho... its balanced between the three tbh, but if i had to choose id go with off the line.

IAT = Intake Air Temperature = Affects performance, no matter timing/AFR. Combustion temps become high if IAT's are high, and may lead to pinging (some may be inaudible to the naked ear) and that WILL lead to lost power, no matter OBDII logs (timing or AFR, respectively)
ECT = Engine Coolant Temperature = affects timing, and that directly affects power output.

I thought high end will be 90+, because 60 is still 2nd gear. My car pulls hard from 2500RPM to just before redline.

Actually you're probably right RH. This is mostly for curiosity sake though, I'm not shooting for 100% technical accuracy here.

I have to agree with you, off the line my car lays rubber about half way thru 1st gear [TCS off] the rpms are at 3500-4000 then climb once the tires grab

My car lays rubber with cheap tires, and does not with good tires. Again, no technical relevance.

Expensive doesn't mean that they're good tires, [reference to your statement about cheap tires] just means there expensive, no technical relevance just common sense. [RSA's are way over $200 each]

Ok, in technical terms, explain to me what determines a sticky tire, or, 'GOOD', with respect to price.

Ok most know or should know high temperature kills power, but please explain how temperature affects timing

You already know the answer to that question, my post was in reference to your statement that you lay rubber with cheap tires, but you can't with good/expensive/sticky tires?

Your ECU hates high ECT's (195+*) and will retard (IGN and CVTC) to an acceptable value numbers.

Normal ECT = 180-195*F.

I agree. My comments below are about the data on a stock VQ engine. Also remember that each engine is somethat different -- from other engines made at the same time, and from the test engine I will be discussing below.

If you look at the torque curve for a tested VQ engine, it is essentially flat from about 2,900 RPM up to about 6,100 RPM. This is from a graph printed in a WardsAuto.com article dated 1/04/06. This article shows that maximum torque from this engine was 260 lb-ft of torque at 4,800 RPM. But the flat torque curve of 250 lb-ft or more of torque goes from about 2,900 RPM up to about 6,100 RPM. If you push RPMs over that upper limit, the torque falls off steeply.

But at lower RPMs (below 2,900 RPM) the torque does not fall off until the engine RPMs fall below about 2,100 RPMs -- when the torque reading is about 230 lb-ft of torque.

When you come off of the line, you must get engine RPMs to above this drop-off in torque to get the engine to pull strongly -- above about 2,100 RPM. Until your engine gets there, it will be somewhat of a dog.

Is this the kind of data that you are looking for, Nmex?

I love it (your data) , and it is very respective, BUT, it still doesn't represent the majority of definitive power curves from A34 owners.

Do you think a cooler thermostat(Z33 for example) would help? Better performance? :P My 6th gen engine is N/A. Thanks

^^^ That's the hope/theory. ^^^

If you really want the engine to run cooler, get an Al radiator. Yes, we can slap the Z33 t-stat on there, but one thing we don't realize is that not only is the Z33 t-stat 'cooler', it (Z33) also comes stock with an Al radiator. . There is one 6th gen member that I know of that already has this 'mod' (Z33 t-stat).

Bingo that is why my 60' times are so crappy. You gotta break torque it above 2100rpm to reach the power. Good stuff, and it identifies my experience so far. Slow off the line, especially without the stock intake setup, which is still a mystery to me (and NmexMax don't you dare say larger MAF to me again J/K . I may actually take you up on that one of these days.) But it's time to chill for the winter. Cattman Y next spring.
