Do you need 91 octane for the maxima?

Do you guys fill with regular 87, or super 91???

Can you actually fill with 87 without problems?
Do you really need 91?

Thx

I use 93 also. I think it says you can use 87 but for best performance its wise to use better gas.

I have always used 87 octane. 3 Years / 34k miles and the car has always performed well (other than some warranty issues not related to gas!).

I never wanted to put high octane in it, in case it got used to it and would ping if I ever went back.

I routinely run 89 in mine for commuting back and forth to work. I'll sometimes throw a tank of 91 in there.

But, really, it runs just fine on the 89.

run what u want, but don't go switching it around. choose 1.

93 for me. it's only $4.50 more a fill up no matter the price.

OH NO, NOT ANOTHER OCTANE THREAD . .

91 is all we have in Cali, but I know where there is 100 octane, so I splash the tank with about 4-5 gallons to bump it up to 94 or so.

FYI the manual says to use high test. I fill up with 93 octane about 4 out of ever 5 fills. I'll run mid-grade every now and again.

damn it!

Go buy a Honda and put 87 in it! On average, 93 vs. 87 will cost about $50 more a year! That's according to my dad referring to our SUV at price about a year or so ago...so give or take a small amount.

I hope that all of you that mod have your engine knock

Honestly don't know why anyone with enough money to buy a 30K+ luxury sport vehicle wouldn't put premium gas in it. Sounds utterly ridiculous to me.

Here in Canada we have 94 Octane: All Petro-Canada branded gasolines contain Tactrol*, a proprietary deposit control additive, sometimes called a gasoline detergent, that is designed to keep fuel systems clean.

And I Notice a significant difference in the way the car responds...period.
No Ping and lots of bling.

You will always get better MPG w/ the 93
Usually enough to the case to where you are wasting more money by using 87

No, 93 octane does NOT give any better MPG than 87. That test has been done many times by many entities over the years. Those individuals 'measuring' this on the road cannot make this determination, as driving conditions vary too widely to make results meaningful. To be meaningful, the test must be done in laboratory conditions. In fact, I believe it was mentioned again in either the Oct or Nov CU mag that, as long as the engine is not pinging, changing octane does not change MPG. Urban rumors to the contrary notwithstanding.

What 93 DOES gives you (once the car recognizes the octane) is slightly more spirited performance and a slightly cleaner engine. I can see why those who love their Maxima would prefer 93.

But the Owner's Manual also makes it clear. Although 93 is recommended, THE MAXIMA WILL RUN PERFECTLY WELL ON 87 OCTANE. Just as my sister-in-law has always used in her Maximas. And never a ping.

It takes the car a considerable period (Nissan says over a tankful) to fully adjust when the octane is changed, and Maxima Owner's Manuals warn not to change the octane frequently. I would say twice a year at most.

I ran 87 in my first few Maximas (starting back in fall of 1984), but have run 89 in my last few. I have never had a ping, or the first sign of engine trouble, and I get very good gas mileage. Almost every article I have read on the subject says using a higher octane than your car really needs is wasting money. I would disagree with that, in that there are those who prefer the slightly improved performance and/or the slightly cleaner engine 93 affords.

But there is no question one could run 87 octane in the Maxima with no harm whatsoever to the engine and no reduction in MPG.

My experience bears out Light's assertion, and I have used 87 since my car was 6 months old without any problems.

Not only do I fully agree with everything lightonthehill has said but almost every US brand of gas are all made in the same refineries and some may add a small additive and call it there own but it's all still the same gas...

93

By Joshua

93, Oh 93
Why are you so good to me?
I'm driving fast, oh can't you see
Me and 93

93, Oh 93
Pinging, that will never be.
Faster, faster! I have to pee!
Me and 93

93, Oh 93
My car is worth the world to me
Come visit me and you will see
Me and 93.

Thank you.

LMAO !! hahahahaha

that was great bro !

but yea, if I agree with what everyone is saying about premium fuel. If it's recommended for the car then why not get it. Also its really not much of a difference in price between regular and premium, most of the time its about 20 cents/gallon. And if you drive a luxury/performance car, I dont see a reason why u wouldnt use premium fuel.

btw, if you havent figured it out by now, I've used premium in my maxima since day 1. =)

93 since day 1, just cause the car can adjust to running on 87 and compensate does not mean it's running like it should.

Alright STOP, collaborate and LISTEN
93 is back with a whole new convention

Something grabs ahold of me tightly
mizzy flows like a harpoon daily and nightly

Will it ever stop? I don't know
Turn off the lights and she'll glow

To the xtreme I rock the streets like a vandal
Light up a stage and wax a beemer like a candle

Dance, Bum rush the turbo that booms
I'm killing your mitsu like a poisonous mushroom

Deadly, when I play a dope melody (with my CAI)
Anything less than the best is a felony

Love it or leave it, You better gain way
You better hit bull's eye, The 6th gen don't play

If there was a problem, Yo, my 93'll solve it
Check out the hook while my stage 2 revolves it

High Octane Baby Vanilla, High Octane Baby Vanilla
High Octane Baby Vanilla, High Octane Baby Vanilla

Now that the Max is jumping
With the bass kicked in and the Koni's are pumpin'

Quick to the point, to the point no faking
I'm smokin' WRX's like a pound of bacon

Burning them if they're not quick and nimble
I go crazy when I hear my Injen

And a hi hat with a souped up turbo
I'm on a roll and it's time to go solo
Rollin' in my 3.5 @93 Octane!
