Intermittent starting problems

Sometimes, the car would not start. The starter would turn strongly, all lights come on brightly, but the car would not start. I would try 5-6 times with no luck. (happened in warm and cold weather). I would leave it for 10mins come back and try again and it would start right up without hesitation. I once had this problem when I turned the car off in reverse by mistake.
I suspect there is a gear positioning sensor that tells the car if its in a gear the allows for starts. This sensor might be the problem. I once was able to put the car in N to get it to start. As a side note: I recently changed my shift plate cover but I suspect that only connects to the dash gear indicator.
Any and all thoughts are welcome.

hmmm, if its a gear issue then while the key is in the on position, shift the car to Neutral then see if it starts to make sure it's a gear positioning issue.

I have the problem now where my car does not want to immediately start after gassing up. Only happens if I open the gas cap.... Ideas anyone?

Wife finds the problem

The wife had to move my car today and she encountered the non start issue again. So she decided to switch keys. Lo and behold the car started with no problems. I replicated this test when i got home and it turns out that only one of my four keys (includes the valet key) starts the car. Are these keys programmed or have something embedded in them?

Funny that the wife found this out, She drives a non-key 07 Altima and does not deal with keys. I never once thought of switching keys. I was ready to take the car in for service at Nissan.

Any thoughts on a fix....
