heat shield problem...

hey y'all!

to all those who had (or have) heat shield issues, did you guys have it fixed or learned to live with it? Im talking about the high-pitched sound (like metal grinding against each other) during acceleration, and Im thinking its the heat shield issue.

Thanks y'all

I wouldnt take it off.. you might fry some IMPORTANT wires...

What i did was take it to my firends shop, get it on the lift, and locate the exact rattle... like WHAT part of the headshield was rattling... I then made sure ALL the bolts near that part were TIGHT...

If you do take it off though, i would make sure you wrap any wires near with some type of heat wrap...

Good luck...

Sounds like a heat shield. If under warranty, it is covered. If you remove it, the welds come with it and you now have an exhaust leak. I had mine removed and welded.

thanks! Im not planning on taking it off, but I was wondering if I need to have it "fixed" ASAP or can it wait without doing any damage to the car. Thanks again for the input.

Its getting colder out, you have plenty of time now, I also removed the OEM header heat shielding when I installed my headers with no problems...

I had that problem when i first got my maxima. I was the only one that could reproduce the grinding noise while accelerating. I took it to the dealership and they said it was the heat shield out of warranty. They adjusted it for free and while they were at replaced my fuel pump or maybe the water pump. One of those pumps...lol. But I had to take it in twice for them to adjust it before it stopped completely.

I have that high-pitched sound too but only at around 1700 RPM. I've inspected the heat-shield brackets and they all looked good. Yesterday I got under there and tried tightening all the associated nuts and bolts. Most of them were really tight but the small 10mm bolts that are holding the vertical, cylindrical shield around the exhaust pipe were slightly loose. Only time will tell if it fixed it, but I didn't hear it on two short drives yesterday.
