Vibration

Hey all,
I just put on a set of new Brakes front and rear! I notice a shake in my steering wheel at 60-65 mph. It is a noticable shake but nothing crazy ! I had my brother in law check the balance on all tires and it checked out fine.

he said he checked the alignment as well and it is fine. He want to know if anything was bent but I told him I haven't hit anything.

I however dont have the stock suspension, I have the Tien Supe Streets Kit and front and rear sway bars.

Would there be anything else i should check before i take it to the dealer.

I do have a lift in a friend of mines garage i can use.

Thanks all

Did you just change your pads?? Or did you re-surface or replace your rotors??

I've never heard of a new rotor being warped or unbalanced but its possible. You could have a brake shop check the runout on it, rotor thickness and diameter. Pads usually only go in 1 way properly so just check the part #'s on them to be sure. Go over all bolts that you had to remove/replace for the job.

My brother in law checked all of that stuff yesterday after hours. He is a service manager for Goodyear, so I trust his judgement seeing he had the car for two days. Maybe i bent something like a control arm or something of that nature!

Sounds like a warped rotor to me. Did he check that?

all new parts

it was doing it before but we thought it was just the tires out of balance and now we come to the conclusion that it is not the tires. It is a pretty fierce shake! BUt I dont know what else to look for !

some new rotors are not true because they are heavy to ship and everyone just drops them. Somebody here has received rotors recently and one was DOA.

Could be the hub and bearing going out. Are you under warranty?

I wouldn't rule out the new rotor being warped, it could have been dropped while still in the packaging, or overtightened lugs could warp the rotor.

They have to prove that the suspension caused the bearing to go out in order to deny the warranty. If you aren't super low they may overlook it. If there is any collision damage they can deny it I'm sure. Wheel impacts or any bent parts such as the control arm.

So i took it to the Dealer and they said the front two wheels were out of balance. My brother in law said it could be true but, he thinks the tires have a heavy side to them that is making them come out of balance all the time. Since he balanced them two times!

That's not uncommon. Sometimes a tired is molded slightly incorrectly. A good tire tech can balance the wheel by itself, find its heavy side and put the heavy side of the tire 180* apart from that location. Sounds easier than it really is. I would try putting the fronts out back and see if it makes a difference.

Those are supposed to be pretty good for handling. Is the internal cords or sidewall reinforcement CF? I have not heard of those. Guy near me is selling a full set of 99% tread Nexen's for $350 so hard to pass that up even if they are not the best, will offer $300. Really want the Pilot Sports, but that's $1000+ I def don't have! That's awesome your Bro works at a tire shop, awesome hook up.

Tweeter and tire store, definitely jealous over here. Beaters rule too. My pickup is the garage queen, go figure!

No, it is not...ma'am it is not..ahem..anyway.

What is the deal with Maxima's and the vibrating steering wheels? Is it always the tires, or is it something in the suspension. Dealers seem to be clueless too. I hope my 04 stays true, or I'm going to be real pissed off.

ya the shimmy is bull****. Everytime I go to the dealer to complain about it they find some random part of the front end to replace. However its only a temp fix and the shimmy always comes back.

So far its been...

1. Balance issue. Balanced the tires and it went away for a week or so.
2. Warped rotors. Resurfaced the rotors and it went away for about a week.

Now its back and im not going to bother bringing it in. For some reason I think theyres some serious type of flaw with the front suspension of the car. Theres no reason for my steering wheel to tweak out like a crackhead when I drive 50-60mph.

**** Nissan.

with that said I still love my car

OKay so I have gotten a New set of BFG's put on my car and the Kumho's were bad. The same thing is happening now. So we know it is not the tires. MY brother in law suspects a bent wheel but he cannot confirm it. I wonder what else could it be. I set a appointment witht the dealer but I want them to look at it and make sure it is fixed my warranty expires in about 1000 miles or so. Maybe the axle? Any other thoughts will be good!

I doubt it is the hub...very difficult to warp and you would have had to hit a rhino to get that damage. take the rotor off the wheel and place it on a flat surface...if there is any wobble at the hub (possible even if new) then there is your problem. its happened to me. Ask nissan to tighten steering rack fraction.

So I went to the Dealer and they did their run off, whatever that means. Come back to tell me we checked everything and nothing seems to be out. They road Forced the Tires and check the hubs. They said since I have a aftermarket suspension it may be because of that. But I dont know HOw the suspension has something to do with how the car vibrates in the steering wheel. They also said the tires have a very aggresive tread and that can be the reason too. What else can I do except for taking of the suspension and putting back on the stock suspension and see what the car feels like!
