If you bought an SE, check the RSA tires -- they are crap and should be replaced ASAP.

Check the condition of the front struts -- some of them fail early -- although mine are at 65 K miles and doing fine.

Because you are not complaining, you apparently don't have the dreaded shimmy problem. My 04 never had that problem, either.

If no shimmy, you're good. Other stuff are pretty easy fix, especially w/ warranty.

my car had the shimmy problem, right around 60-70mph. Turned out to be a balance issue (weights came off the rims) so it did the shimmy sham. Brought it back to nissan and told them, fixed it. All better =]

other then that i just bought my 04se 2 weeks ago and i love it.

I cant wait to buy my 2004 SE this april, jeez.

It's all I think about, all days :P

What do you mean front struts failing?
What fails, and why?

The shock absorber that you gotta replace?

Thx

IMO, all the threads I have read on strut failure where OEM struts on cars that were lowered. And most were members who were lowered with bigger rims (19, 20, 22) with low profile tires or lived in big cities with sh!ty roads. This Morning I finally removed my OEM struts (over 4 years with ZERO problems) because I went coilover and these babies never let me down, and I've been lowered on Eibach for 3+ years...

Congrats on your purchase. Even thou your car is 04 just like mine you have less miles on it.

Chern - > I had my right axle replaced and now I am going in for my driver's side. Yes I am lowered and live in a city with shi-y roads.

EDIT: I noticed you were talking about struts...well from what I see it applies to axles too.

I just bought an 04 SL with 36,000 on it completely stock and my left front strut was blown and the right one rattles like hell. Dealer fixed them both and it rides fine except the left front rotor makes noise now...

Whats this shimmy everyone talks about?

Your steering wheel wiggles when you get around 60mph.
Mine does it when I'm braking. I need new rotors.

If you have the Bose system and you live in cold weather, your cd's may fog up and skip. I had my HU replaced then started skipping again 1yr later, just after warranty expired. Other than that its been a great car.

Hope you don't mind me piggy-backing of your thread Porgie. I too just bought a '04 with 49,800 miles a week ago. Made this gurgling noise when I accelarated from a complete stop. Turned out to be low coolant level. Topped it to the max line and now the gurgling noise is gone. Checked the level day after day and saw that it was NOT going down... WHEW! NO LEAK!

when i first test drove my 04 sl there was knocking noise when i hit bumps 45,xxx miles.. told the dealer to fix it before i sign a check over to him and this was a toyota dealer..i told him it was the struts but they didnt listen and ended up replacing braces and ****. then they sent me a email sayin i was right and they replaced the front struts. had a pretty noticible shimmy round 55-60 but its actually going away. only shaking i really notice now is when i stop. which i believe is nissans crappy front rotors that warped will be replacing with brembos hopefully soon car now has 47,200 miles......question are we able to replace the fuel filter on these cars??

36,000 I believe is the Basic Warranty expiration. 60,000 is the powertrain's warranty expiration.

36,000 or 36 months (whichever comes first) is the basic warranty, and 60,000 or 60 months (whichever comes first) is the power train warranty.

So this brings up a question. Since I bought mine used, which still has about 10k left on the powertrain warranty, if and when I bring it to the Nissan dealer will they go by the mileage if say I have a powertrain issue? Obviously I'll ask this the next time I have an oil change or something... just curious with those that have run into this situation already.

yeah since the car i was looking at is basically out of warranty..and im not buying from a nissan dealer, is it still a good deal? how much is a "certified pre owned" really worth buying from a nissan dealer?

and how much do extended warrantys cost?

Sounds like a cylinder misfire, that happened to me, got it read by autozone. the light went away, then came back but was now egr valve..... my cats fragmented and went into the egr system. take it to the dealer and have them look at it, they replaced my cats at 59k miles under the factory warranty. The cylinder misfire was supposedly just a blip.

I had this problem in my 2000. It's a cylinder misfire... happened around 50k for me. Same exact symptoms you describe.

So you say bad ignition coil/coils at 52.000 miles? That's hard to believe, since the engine is VQ35

Desperate! Need some advice before I go to the dealer. Tomorrow on 3/17/2008.

Hey all I have a 2004 Nissan Maxima With 52,xxx Miles on it. So far, I kinda love/hate it.

As i haVe written before I got an oil change on 3/10/2008 from a quick lube place... Now about 6 days later I am having the following issues with the car:

- Rough Start
- Check Engine Light
- Excessive white smoke from tail pipe that smells like gas. Huge cloud of some when accelerated.

I checked the oil level and it looks fine. I belive they have me 4.3 liters of 10w30 castrol oil.

Anyhow i have the 100,000 Mile 7 year Gold Preferred Plus Warrenty. I am not sure if i should tell them about the oil change. Any how I am also love on cash.

Can anyone give me any advice on how to work with the dealer and ensure they obey the warrenty.

One more thing. I bought this car in October of 2007. The extedned warrenty is not under my name. Should i have the guy i bought it from call the dealer and tell them that his "friend" is dropping the car off?

Please Help.

Hey I have had my 2004 Maxima for 6 months.. Here are the issues I am having

-Blown Strut (LOL)
-Wiggle at 60mph
-The infamous back panel rumble.. (speakers or speed bumps it rumbles there is a TSB)
-The air in the heat coil and cold air issue.
- Now check engine light with white smoke that smells like gas. Alot of smoke when I accelerate.

I do have the 100,00 Mile gold preferred Warranty. SO guess I will see. I like the Max in the begining. Far inferior to my 96 with 234,000 Miles on it.
