Shopping for a 6th gen: SE or SL?
Hey guys. After being almost a year without my max, I finally have the funds to start looking for a 6th gen max. My 05 was wrecked by a drunk driver running the intersection last May; everyone was alright though. I know this topic has been brought up in the past. I searched thoroughly before posting. The outlet that I'm looking to score a sweet deal is at the auto auction; my dad has a dealer license and can check the listings of cars online. I know one may not get all the features that he/she wants, but it will be a bargain compared to going through the traditional route of dealer lots. I wanted to get an SE but what about an SL? I'm going to end up changing the suspension anyway to H&R springs and KYB AGX or GR2 shocks and use the 19 x 8.5 Millie Miglia Evo 5s that were on my 95 max. I wasn't sure if an 05 to 06 SL had traction control like the SE. Does it? As for the wood grain in an SL, I could change that with a dash kit. Any input would be appreciated.

i bought an 04 SE with 24K miles on it about 6 months ago, private sale.
-auto
-leather
-Bose
-heated seats
-rear wing/lip
i love the car.
i paid $16,500 for it and it was perfect- other than needing tires (which were replaced free of charge under the goodyear recall!)

personally when i purchased my SL i went straight for the features and the look.i preferred the navigation system look than the screen with the yellow numbering. as for traction control unfortunetly mina does not have it. but it does has a lot of other advantages...

Thanks guys. Part of me just wants to run out to the dealerships and snag up a used 6th gen. However, if I'm able to be patient in the auction circuit, I may get what I want and save some change. At last Friday's auction, there was a black 04SL w gray leather and moonroof w 46587 miles, but it was a 4speed auto.
I almost cried since I wanted at least a 5 speed.

I am running an SL, at the time it was probably more of a spontaneous buy for me. But having gone back again I most likely would go SE 6MT with DPP. I do like the leather and stock HID's. But if you are going to change the suspension and are gong for AT then go either way...

I had an 05 SL. I thought it was the perfect blend. I also had the DPP (Xenon's, powerfolding mirrors, sunroof, heated wheel....etc). I felt utterly spoiled in it.
My one change I might do, when I do it again? A 6-spd......

Go for SE 05 or 06 ....
Bought 04 SE Silver with 39k miles for $17100 in 2006 from private owner.
Automatic
Navigation
Leather
Bose in-dash 6CD changer
Heated seats
Memory seat
Heated steering wheel
Spoiler
Tinted glass
All Goodyear Eagle RSA tires with 90% threads
Moonroof
Xennos
Power folding mirrors
Currently at 69k miles and having couple of minor issues but going strong.

They say the SE has a firmer suspension, but is there really any difference in the suspension if both SE and SL have the same wheel+tire?
As far as I know, one can load both the SE and SL with all features. The only difference, other than tire+wheel size, is the simulated wood trim in a SL that is not available in a SE. Is there anything else?

the suspension is very different. you can feel how big the maxima is on the SL and the ride is more cush. the se has a tigher suspension. the sl has the seat and dash that move in/down as you start the car. it has more stock bells and whistles (most of which you can find on a loaded se). an se with 6-speed, leather, navigation, and sun roof is the perfect car, though. the closest i could find locally was my altima se-r. (no navigation, but there are three gauges straight out of the Z instead).
go to a lot and pretend to be looking to buy (dont let them run your credit) and drive the se and sl. the sl is comfortable; the se is attentive.
