MAX SL OWNERS----> SHIMMY GONE AT A PRICE

I had my shimmy in my 07 cured.... !! Also had an 04 SL with shimmy ..
Today I had expensive Michelin PRIMACY MXV4 put on the car about $860 .. The car rides smooth as silk and NO shimmy anywhere !! These tires made believer out of me about Michelin tires. These are the newest tires from Michelin 17" ....

The shimmy that I had was around 55MPH just like the 04 SL... I really didnt expect the shimmy to be gone.

So if you are unhappy as I was with 07 / 04 SL shimmy .. if you can this might be the way to go if you want to spend the bucks.. I did swap out the tires on the 04 with Goodyear Comfort tires and it did nothing .....

For what its worth !!

John ..

ummm...the proper balancing that your car got was probably what stopped the shimmy

When you drive about 3k to 5k miles, can you report us back on shimmy?

Hub centric rings with my 19in wheels stopped mine. On the stocks I never had the shimmy.

the shimmy hits all max's not just the 07/07 sl. I have an 04 SE and Ive had the shimmy on and off since day 1. Wheel balance is normally the problem, but its could be rotors/tires/rims etc.

I honestly believe there is no "shimmy" specific to the max. All cars shake when tires arent balanced....

True, but my shimmy went away when I did my pads, then back when I got a flat (and rebalanced) and hasn't gone away since

yep, a tire balance or tire tread issue. for me it was tire tread issue.

Yes, but these Maximas are extra-sensitive to the roads's imperfections compared with other vehicles

I had the same experience when getting my Michelin Primacies put in but the old tires were unevenly worn. It is probably the rebalancing and even tires that eliminated the problem.

But not many cars still "shimmy" after new tires being put on and balanced like 3 times from 3 different places. New tires worked for this particular person but im not about to waste more time and money on this.

I've noticed that when I rotate my tires there is no shimmy for a set of two. But when I rotate again and put those two back in front the shimmy is back. I dont think there is any science behind it if something works for you be happy.

I had 4 bald tires and a bad alignment AND bad brakes not too long ago. My 04 SE would shimmy away, all day pretty much. I got 4 new tires, brand new brakes & and an alignment...SHIMMY is still here.. When it first started occuring a year after purchase, dealer cured it once for about a month, then it came right back.. thats it. It really sucks.

factory rims/tires are normally to blame, most lose the shimmy when they go with aftermarket rims.

There is a TSB on the shimmy, Proper balance and good tires are the first step.

If that doesnt fix it there is an adjustment on the steering rack tension the cures most of them, Basically the rack tension is too loose and causes the wobble. a 1/4 turn on the rack tension nut and it will usually cure this light shimmy problem at 45ish mph.

They should've had a recall on the shimmy and cut down the turning radius (even tho i dont think thats possible)

I never had a shimmy on my 04 SE with stock goodyears. It does sound like I have snow tires due to the outside of the tread wearing unevenly.

Bought my 04 SE with 28k on it. A month or so after i got it, a shimmy in the wheel came on... over the course of the next while, i got an alignment, new tires, new pads and rotors. every time i did one of those fixes, the car would be better for a while then go right back to what it was doing.

I am willing to do what it takes at this point, but dont know that even spending the money will do anything. What do you guys think?

Start with unbolting your front wheels, With the weight off the wheels TQ the wheels evenly to 20-30 fltbs
After that tq them to spec. You would be suprized how many vibrations I have fixed by doing this. If I just impact the wheels on the wifes 07 it vibrates, If I do this procedure it is perfectly smooth.

Also make sure the hub faces are clean behind the wheels and the wheel does not have to be forced on the hub by tightening the lug nuts.
