How do you know? They are fails safe, so, the car will run cool as heck. Also, they're cheap and easy to fix.

Mine stuck in the close position, Sandy Sansing Nissan in Pensacola wanted like $120 to fix it and said it would be 3 days before they could get to it. The temp gauge would go all the way to the H if I continue'd to run it. The thermostat came in the entire housing for $24. The bottom screw is hard to get to, there's not much space and you will have to go to sears and buy some thumb socket adapters and try to turn the screws with your fingers and you have to remove the coolant fill tank and covers. A hour job but took me about 5hrs.

The old one looked deteriorated but the car had never run hot before!

My thermostat was the original but mine didn't have the fail safe, It stuck in the close position. I know O'reilly sales the Murry Thermostats and they are fail safe! You have to use a special screw driver bit to remove the olde themostat fron the housing. I looks sort of like a screw head that a F-18 uses on it panels.

It's a security screw. Elbow grease. I had to remove one from a Z33 unit and bolt it into my housing, FTW. madmik has done the same, minus the unit transplant, IIRC, he just transplanted the entire unit.

Will do the next time, sorry Gent's. Hopefully my Max just had a defect and not everybody's thermostat don't go. I also notice that all my belts were cracking bad!
