Hi fellow members

I have a 2005 Nissan Maxima SE 3.5.

I have been using Hawk HPS HB370F.559 pads for a while now. I’m actually on my second set which were recently installed in late January. I have between aprox 2 – 3 K Kms that’s well under 1,800 miles. They have never made noise before and yet I am getting a clicking noise in my right rear brake…and only on that side… now when I brake lightly while rolling in to a stop such as a stop sign or parking (in a driveway) when the brakes are warm. I have Hawks HPS Pads in the front and rear of the car too and yet this is the only one that makes noise. The dealer told me that it’s because they are aftermarket pads and not Nissan original and that this particular pad on that side is not fitting perfectly like the others. The pads came with shim plates. I personally believe that the dealer is wrong and that there is either something wrong with the calipers or the e-brake (emergency hand brake) or something else. As I mentioned this noise happens only when I brake lightly and when the brakes are warm. If there was a problem with the brake pads would they not make a noise on both sides too. And why is this problem only happening now. This is my second set of Hawk pads that I have installed in this car and I have been using Hawk pads now for close to 3 years. Is it possible that my rotors need machining? The rotors are not factory originals...they were replaced less than 2 years ago with my first set of Hawk pads.

Any help or opinions would be welcome and appreciated.

Update from HAWK my Dealer and my aftermarket parts supplier
Ok So I called the dealer and asked if the noise could be related to the E-brake system and they said that they would check in to it. In January I had the whole system serviced including the fluid flushed. They had adjusted the hand brake as well...a bit too tight IMO. I asked my friend who supplies my aftermarket parts including the Hawk Pads and the rotors and asked him if the rotors needed to be changed and he was quite sure that he did not believe that they needed to be as they were under two years old. The rear rotors are aftermarket EURO rotors and are cadmium plated. I also spoke with HAWK customer support and they told me that they had a batch (slang for manufacturing lot) that had a problem related to the size of the backing plate and how that plate fits the rear caliper. They have since corrected the manufaturing issue and offered to send me a new set of rear pads in replacement free of charge! That is just amazing customer service on the part of Wellman Products who manufacture the HAWK pads. Still, it's a bit strange that the sound would be coming from only one side and not the other.

If anyone has their own ideas feel free to reply! I will keep everone posted on the progress....I should receive the new pads by next week.

Are you able to do some minor work/job in your car?
1. jack-up your car at rear right end (thats where you have noise right?)
2. remove rear right wheel
3. Tight lugnut using spacers on only rotor
4. spin your rotor by hand
Now keep close eyes on rotor rotations. If you see a little play while rotor is spinning by hands, you found the problem. The problem is either your rotor is not sitting right on hub or there are some debris stuck in between rotor and hub surface. Try to clean that out and see if you can clear out that play. If not, the problem is your hub actually has play and that cause your brake to squeal and make noise at low speed. If you do not want to replace (I suggest you must replace hub assembly) the hub assembly, go get some organic OEM style pads and it will stop making noise but with some pad dust on wheels.

I have seen pads make a clicking noise, especially aftermarket. It has happened to my friends and me on more than 1 occasion. Since HAWK stated they did have a bad batch, I would wait til the free replacements came in. If those don't work, then I would check for debris between the rotor and hub, like saraara stated above.
