6 speed or automatic?

6 speed or automatic?
About to get a 04-05 Maxima...Should I get the 6 speed or the automatic. I drove both and for some reason the auto seemed like it had more juice, but I dont know what to do. The 6spd I found was in better shape, but had more 20K more miles and was $1000 cheaper. Both cars were the same otherwise.

I find the manual transimitions are more enjoyable. Meaning, you can really feel that you are driving. Auto's could feel faster...but that is just one attribute.

Defiantly a 6speed. More fun to drive. It feels great to feel the power and be in control of the engine.
Def a 6speed, unless you are buying the car for other reasons than fun.
Oh and a plus for me, the wife is scared of a stick, and will never try to drive my car lol

I have a 5spd auto and its no bore thats for sure... but the 6spd will be more responsive...
i live in california where there is a TON of traffic so i enjoy my 5psd auto..
its all up to you, no1 can tell u what to get...

The 6 speeds are ugly anyway. They make the car look like junk. Sorry to talk trash on a fellow Max but they're cheap looking with a stick.

Damn it, more 6spd vs. 5spd auto comparisons...the 5spd auto will slightly win in a straight line, assuming that both have same mods and the 6spd can drive.
Auto-x...that's a different story.
If you want the chance of replacing a 5spd auto transmission then go with the 5spd. If you want a clutch pedal that won't come off the ground at times, then go with the 6spd. When it comes down to it, 6spd will be cheaper and more fun once you learn how to drive it.

what planet is this from? Or are you ref to that boring event where people drive in a straight line and make a big production out of it.
Here is my callout, oct 25th, 2008 at 9am: mosport raceway grand prx track. Full day event, anyone interested in bringing their auto maxima/altima/g35 or 350z against my manual maxima is welcome.
Cut the useless chat about autos and show what you got. 5 laps and best average time. Who's on?
Get the 6sp

its all about preference. I have the 5 speed Auto and i love it. When i want to be lazy, or am in traffic, i can simply leave it in drive. When i feel like being aggressive and having some fun, i slap the shifter over and use the slap shift. Its all up to you. For me, 5 Speed auto with the slap shift is just what i love. Cant go wrong with either, good luck!

just ask yourself what kind of driving you do? city? or highway?
because unless you plan on racing it or modding it like some of the 6 speed members on this board, it all depends on you and your driving.

I test drove a auto before I got my 6spd and the 6spd definitely felt faster.
A couple of months ago I raced a auto maxima (both of us are stock) and I took him pretty easily from both a stop and a roll.

04 to 08 Maximas suck too big and cumbersome. They look as if they are neandering around curves. If you want to purchase some satisfaction go with the 02 or 03 6 speed manny. You will not be sorry. If your just looking to goet something new looking hold off for the 09, the four wheel indie suspension (that was discontinued aftert the third gen) is back in the 7th gen. Find a low mileage 5.5 and go with that I think it looks better than a sixth too. Oh if you have to have something between 04 & 08 go with the 3.5 Altima, alot more fun to drive than the same yrs. Max.
get a 5.5 6speed aka the most beastly max up to date....
4DSC=3.5, 5.5, and 7th gens(from the info they have released on the car so far) IMO

IRS returned with the 04.
and if they wanted a manual, then why look at a 7th?

Thanx for the free edu. When I said hold on for a 7th I was talking about getting something new looking. Having a newer looking car is the only reason I could see why anyone would want a 6th gen is why.

Thats funny, I was thinking the exact same thing. Kamski: Good call in calling anyone out to fight. I say to anyone who thinks an auto is faster - Put ur money where ur mouth is.
Its a no-brainer. Get the 6 speed.

as far as what you should get.. as a few others have said, it all depends on your driving environment and style... if you drive in alot of traffic, then chances are the stick/clutch are going to become very cumbersome, and you're going to get tired of pressing that clutch in... but if you're in an environment where you can go pretty much freely, then you might be more satisfied with the stick if you enjoy controlling your gears.. i have a 6 speed, and driving in philly isn't too bad.. i don't drive downtown alot, but when i do hit traffic, it is VERY annoying with the stick
