Now what? P1402 and P0420
So i went to my buddy's shop today to get my codes read...
These are the two that came up...
P1402
p0420
What do you suggest to do... Start w/ cleaning the MAF?
Check and make sure no air leaks are anywhere
Clean out throttle body area
I always use 91 so i know thats now it...
I hear ppl saying that 1402 is a common code.. a lot of ppl in the 5th gen area say dont worry about it... Small miss fire...
My bank one was at -8% so i am running a little rich
What do u guys suggest...

well i used the wonderful search button and found that it might have something to do w/ EGR... but which part of the egr??? vac hose... Soleniud ... i dont want to go anywhere near the deal cause' they said EGR is covered till 50k... im at 56k...
some other threads say the cat might be out... but i have a cattman y pipe w/ no cat...
Should i take off the y pipe and cai and take it to teh dealer...
the SES is still on so i know they would be able to see that its p0420 and p1402...
Dealer said they would fix any cat problem because they are covrd till 80k... but i have my cattman y so i am wondering if its not even the cat since there is not one on my y?

Hmmm good questions shoey...
he didnt say/tell me
But from all my research im almost sure its something w/ the EGR...
I have found SO many threads on EGR probs w/ those codes...
I guess ill go back tomorrow and see if he knows what the P is...
He did say that it said there was a cat prob... but again .. i dont have the cat on the Y ... so how can i be bad???
I have had the cattman y for like 10 months if not longer, with no SES till now...

P1402 is EGR Function, P0420 indicates the ECM doesn't believe the converter is doing it's job.
Check out the FSM, it's a great tool to use for diagnostics (especially with DTCs) and everything else. See my sig...

I got the P1402 code before. Apparently my EGR valve was stuck open and both pre-cats went bad. The invoice says "EGR sensor reading below 1 volt at idle". I'm not sure about the EGR valve, but if I remember correctly the dealer said each pre-cat cost around $900. I had everything replaced under warranty around 35k miles.

That's exactly the problem I have now and posted a while back. I got a used cat from car-parts.com but I don't think it was good either. Now, I'm waiting on headers from Cattman to eliminate this problem. Why spend $900 on one cat when I can get headers. The dealer wanted $1500 installed. I got my max at 88K thousand miles.

thats what i thought but i spoke to a guy at my local dealer today and he said 50k...
i have PM'd winterfaust ... but he has not replied... or posted...
hope you checks his accnt soon LOL

Aren't you trying out Cattman's headers for the 5AT? I beleive that would remedy the situation. I remember the nissan tech telling me that our precats, especially the rear one goes bad pretty often. Eliminating the faulty precat with the headers is the route that I'm headed. Your dealership will fix it for free though since it's covered till 80K miles.

So pre-cats=on the exhaust manifolds, correct? Not something that an after-market y-pipe could fix, is it?
Any symptoms of bad pre-cats besides SES lights? What about the EGR valve?
I also heard that emission components are covered up until 90k...

The bad precats are trippin the EGR code. I spent a month and a half over the summer running from dealership to mechanic trying to figure it out. You heard wrong about the emission compoenents. All the dealerships in my area 3 of them plus the ones in the city 70 miles away from me 3 more all said it was 80K.

80k, 90k, close enough

Did not take mods off. They wont notice yout SSIM, wouldnt worry too much about your y pipe. My dealer happens to love my car. As winterfaust said...take care of your service person no matter how bland and unhappy he may act. i happen to be one of those people who dont blame nissan for my strut mounts after I replaced my struts and springs...They wont blame your y pipe on your pre cat failure if occurred. Hope all goes well. Tis an expensive fix. If your exhaust was repaired from a faulty heat shield, that may have caused the issue.
#25
If it's really the pre-cats, then just make sure you get a cat for your Y-pipe and just put the headers on. They don't have cats anyway. you should be fine then. You can read anm6 thread "going to the dealer" Faust had some good stuff to say there too.

my engine light came on today so i threw the scanner on it from work and it was the same "1402- EGR on too soon". i cleared the code and drove it and it didn't come back. IF the light comes back on for the same code, i will do a tutorial on how to remove/clean/reinstall it with pics

DTC P1402 EGR function
From service manual :
If battery voltage is within specs, then:
- EGR valve electric circuit may be shorted and is keeping EGR open.
- EGR volume control valve may be leaking or stuck open
- EGR temperature sensor is bad, sending incorrect signal to ECU
DTC P0420, P0430 THREE WAY CATALYST FUNCTION
Catalyst system efficiency below threshold
Check:
- Three way catalyst (manifold)
_ Exhaust tube (leaks)
_ Intake air leaks
_ Fuel injectors
_ Fuel injector leaks
_ Spark plug
_ Improper ignition timing

P1402 is serious business, If your cats got destroyed in the process pieces of it can be sucked back into the engine. I had the EGR valve replaced and the dealer checked the cats for loose pieces but Kamski here wasn't luck (or was he) and had to had the engine replaced (under warranty)

P0420 - Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)
P0430 - Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 2)
My tech said no. If you get the P0420 it's probably the pre-cat failing. I am out of the 80k warranty so I am not taking any chances. Taking it in to see what they determine.

Thanks Apollos, I did the EGR Valve "Small Tube" clean out job and I'm about to put it all back together and test it. (Just tried to see if maybe that was it since i've only used 87 octane in it since I bought it new (3 years ago.) There was a decent amount of carbon build up, but no where near clogged.)
I'll have to see if auto zone will clear the code to see if it comes back on or not.
I wanted to get the EGR Valve off to see if there were any cat pieces in it, but I didn't want to get in a jam. That bottom tube nut seemed to be to hard to get to without taking off some more parts. I put an 8 in cressent wrench on it just to see if I could maybe get it (before going get a 30mm wrench) and there wasn't much room at all. I wish I had the mechanical skills of some on here.
Mine is an early 06 (bought it new in 2/06) now has only 40K miles, Only getting the P1402 code (no other code).
I'm concearned that mine may be in that 05 batch that was under the TSB for the cats troubles, Hope not.
Thanks for the info and help!

From the way I understand it EGR valves rarely go bad. So if the cat peices are in the valve (or carbon possibly ??) and keeping it open therefore causing it to malfunction, couldn't the EGR valve just be cleaned up and reused?
Instead of having to buy a costly new one?

Good thing I got my headers installed when I did, as my pre-cat was on its last legs.
