CEl [cats]
My car just threw a P0420 [efficiency below threshold] the other day, just wondering if anybody knows how long I have until it will cause catastrophic damage/engine failure..basically how long do I have until they start breaking apart? I know very little about exhaust systems and I want to get the headers from cattman now that this problem has arisen, just wondering how long I have due to $. I plan on pulling the exhaust off tomorrow or the next day to inspect it, and im at 64000 miles, but the emissions warranty is 8/80k correct?

Definitley a warranty item. You will not be able to inspect the pre-cats, they are between the motor and firewall. You would have to remove them to inspect them.
How long until engine failure? Maybe Kam can chime in but why take any chances. Mine is parked until I replace those cats with the headers. ETS 2 more weeks. http://forums.maxima.org/6th-generat...rade-time.html
As far as passing emssions withoutthe cat. You may not pass the visual but you will pass the actual test itself. If you just punch out the cat, it will still look like you have on on the car, realistically it won't help your performance if you get rid of it. Save your time and money on that one.

Okay some states visually check under the car to see if the can actually see the catalytic converter, if you cut it out and replace it with straight pipe, they will see that it is missing and you dont pass the test.
You can see the difference in the pic. There is no cat in the pipe on the right.
As far as the part of the test where they actually check the exhaust/emission output, our cars can pass that test without the cat in the y-pipe. I've been passing it for two years now. (We don't have a visual test here)

P0420 has nothing to do with the main cat.
The main cat which is missing in the Apollos2 picture, is the one most people associate with emissions testing. It is the one the inspector visually checks for, if they check at all.

Awesome..I was thinking that the warranty was longer for emissions..just wanted to make sure. And im really glad I didnt waste my time looking ripping out my exhaust only to find out that I couldn't see them in the first place..I was planning to do that later today haha. Unfortunately I dont really have the luxury to park my car and wait, so im going to have to just go in and have them replaced asap, this will be my first time to go to the dealership for anything since ive had the car..I know they can be hard to deal with, any advice?
