04 max 6 spd man transmission reverse shift problems
04 max 6 spd man transmission reverse shift problems
Hello all
I have a 04 max manual 6speed with 86K miles on it.
Since recently I often (not always) happen to find myself in the 6th gear instead of reverse in my attempts to back up my car. At first I thought I was just my mistake. But after it happening too often I realized that it is my gear box or transmission that seems to be acting up.
During those moments, I noticed that after I pull the reverse lever on the stick and put it into reverse, the stick seems to make contact with "something that didn't use to be there before". Using my normal arm force at which I move the gear stick this “apparent obstruction” causes my gear to move in the 6th gear instead of the reverse.
When I consciously exert more shifting force then this “apparent obstruction” seems to "move aside", with a clicking noise which I also can feel as an impulse in the palm of my hand through my stick as it moves into reverse.
It doesn't happen all the time though. For example, when I go to the dealer's mechanic, and he tries it, it works normal (typically
). It happens sporadically and typically at moments when you are not looking for it.
Anyone has any ideas what might be going on? Anyone experienced this too?
Cheers,
G

Galto- Not sure if you may be having the same problem but I was able to back the shift **** off unthreading one complete turn and my problems are gone. I found that when I pulled the shifter boot off that the mechanism simply wasn't pulling the "lock" up high enough. Hope this helps.
