Seeing as transmission problems seem to be popping up a lot recently, and catalytic converters and timing chain tensioners also seem to be problematic, I just wanted to see when other people either began having problems with or replaced any of the above, or even any other parts which you think might be commonly replaced. This may help with any issues brought to Nissan's attention.

I just had my transmission replaced, as well as my short block, all under extended warranty. The short block was changed due to excessive oil consumption, I'm thinking more than likely caused by previously failed pre-cats. I've had many things replaced under warranty, but I'm only listing things which I think may be common.

Transmission: Replaced @ 73k miles, noticed problems from 2-1 gear @ 50k miles.
Catalytic Converters: Replaced @ 36k miles.
Timing Chain Tensioners: Replaced at 73k miles, noticed problems at least 20k prior to.

Others:
Short block replaced @ 73k miles.
Roof strips replaced @ 32k miles, bad again less than 5k miles after.
AC hose replaced @ 50k miles.

 

First trans at about 71,000, second trans at about 80,000, timing chain tensioners at about 86,000.

No issues with the cats... yet.

 

Traded her in before I had to deal with any of it. Had Cattman headers anyways. At least the OEM cats were fine.

 

those 3 things u have mentioned is the most common problem with these gen

 

Transmission replaced at 125,000 miles and no other issues as far as I know..yet.

 

Transmission shift bang, delayed engagement, and all that fun stuff started at 62k.
Got a new valve body at 64k just last week. So far so good.

I don't have the timing chain issue or the catalytic converter issue...........yet.

 

Common problems affecting the 6thgen maxima/3rd gen altima:

1) AT Transmission
2) Pre-cats
3) Timing chain tensioner
4) ABS actuator and/or sensors

Out of the ones listed I have had issues with all except the tensioner for now.

Im currently at 105k miles and I had transmission issues (hard shifts) at around 30k miles. Luckily for me flushing out the system and filling it with Amsoil ATF solved it and I havent really had any issues since. Only issue I have once in awhile that started recently, is a slight slip from 3-4.

My pre-cat (rear) failed at around 80.5k miles. Since the emissions warranty is only good til 80k, the dealer did not want to replace it. Seeing how I had only passed the warranty by 500miles I called Nissan Consumer Affairs and fought to have them replace it out of good will, in which they did.

And now I'm having the ABS problem. ABS engages during slow stops, ABS light comes on, and I hear a buzzing sound from the engine bay. I just finished cleaning my RR sensor so I hope that was the problem. I will have to drive it tomorrow and see if the problem returns. If it is the actuator I guess I will just drive without ABS by removing the fuse.

If enough people complain about a certain problem to the NHTSA then it has a high chance of becoming a recall.

So all this would apply to an 05 SE-R I am looking at, man and I thought I had a foolproof plan. My 4th gen kills at longgevity, how do yall still like your cars?

 

cats and long block engine at 60,000 under warantee
manual transmission at 62,000 under warantee
