Possible 2006 purchase

Question for your 6th generation owners...I currently own a 2001 max with 165,000 and am looking at a 2006 maxima sl. The dealer wants 15,800 for the car with 53,000 miles. It is fully loaded with every option including the "chrome nissan rims". Is this a good price and will I be happy with this maxima generation.......I checked kelly blue book and they are close on the asking price

SN: if you still want to buy, go by NADA book value, if its still close and you are satisfied, go ahead with your purchase. but i would read that thread, just to give yourself a heads up

That's a low mileage car for its year, that's a good thing. Without looking it up , just guessing, that price is around dealer retail. But you should not pay retail for one of these cars...try to get him down as low as he will go, then go $200 below that... Because if you shopped around, you could get an 08 loaded for maybe $17,000. My 07SL loaded w/NAV retail from NADA is around $21k with less than 40,000 on the clock, that doesn't mean you should pay that much for it.

As pointed out, be wary of the transmission, get an extended warrantee, but don't spend too much on it, ($1500 max for 100k miles 5 years). The 6.5 gen (07 and 08) with CVT have 10 year 120 mile warrantee on the transmission. For a little newer, and if you're OK with CVT (I'm cool with it), then look for one of those.

Thanks for the info so far guys. That is why I love this site. I am driving the car tomorrow and will find out about extended warranty for the car and transmission. I am a little weary of the car with low mileage for an 06although the dealer says it is "nissan certified". Will keep you posted.

UPDATE

Just went and test drove the 06 max and it seemed fine. The car is nissan certified and comes with a 2.5 year or 100,000 mile warranty on anything that goes wrong including drivetrain and full transmission replacement. I explained to them my concern of the transmission and they are standing by this warranty and also will flush the tranny fluid before I pick up if I decide to purchase. My 01 has a rear axle leaking, both front lower control arm needs replaced and they are offering me $3000 for my car. It is a very clean car with no rust but miles are 165,000. I had them run my credit which is great but still pondering the decision.. Just wondering what I should do.

rear axle leak?!?!??!?!

SN: someone correct me if im wrong, but at a certain amount of miles they may not want to flush that trans. someone will chime in on that..as far as the trade in value...try to get 3500. i mean..trade in wise, thats pretty much what you are going to get offered..when i was about to trade mine, thats what tehy offered me

That's decent setup with a warrantee already included. Mileage coverage is cool, but try to get more then 2.5 years...at least 4 years would make me feel better about it. Did you talk them down any in price? Either way, with the extened warrantee and the cirtified, it's a pretty good price...

Dealer and myself might have a deal....They are giving me $3500 for my 01 max with 165,000 miles and the 06 max I talked them down to $15000 with Nissan certified warranty until 100,000 miles includes transmission replacement/fixing. My monthly payment of $260/5 years is easily doable by me. I think I am going to go forward in the next couple days......Keep you posted

You guys are confusing me more.....Mixed feelings about whether I should get the 06 SL. The stealer is offering me 100,000 miles or 2.5 years whichever comes first in terms of the Nissan certified warranty. Car has 53,000 currently on it...

I think as long as you get the extended warranty and make sure they deal with the transmission and timing tensioner issues you should be totally fine.

This is my 9th Nissan and i've had two of everything and I enjoyed my 5th gen maxima because it was reliable.. My 05 max SL sounds like a jet when it drive because of the stupid tension problem with the chain. It down shifts for no freaking reason (already 2nd tranny) and it shimmies like a Hawaiian girl at a luau. PLUS...the brakes and rotors are CRAP... If you still want a 6th gen get it but its gonna be nothing but a pain in the A**...

My thoughts...

Ok the more and more I read the mixed reviews of whether or not I should get the 06 SL, I am leaning on keeping my 01 for another year....165,000 and runs great with no payment............

Since I am keeping my 01 Maxima, any thoughts or ideas on what vehicle should I get next? I like the look of the Altima SL but not sure of its reliability. I can't afford a 7th gen maxima so it is more likely I will drive the 01 with 165,000 miles a little longer until it dies..........Thanks for all the input from everyone...

Alright, since you're set on keeping the 01, do me this one favor...call the dealership with the 06, tell the sales guy you would only be interested if he sold you the car for 15k, and 4500 for your trade-in. That should be an even 1000 lower then the last offer you told us about...see if he bites. The worst that could happen is he says cool, then you turn it down anyway...

I just want to see if they considered your trade worth the adjustment...besides, it might make the deal more lucrative for you...

I would look into an 05-06 G35. I wish I would have went that route instead of my Maxima.

I would not finance a car for five years with that kind of milage because the warranty will expire and you will still owe 2.5 years left on the loan, try looking for a 07 or newer they are a lot of Max's out there for that price go to either cars.com or auto trader and put you price in there and the year of the car 07 or new and you will see a bunch for sale even at the dealers. The 07's or new comes with the CVT Tranny which really has no issues and is now warranted for 10 years or 120000 miles I believe. Now if you can take out a 3 year loan and afford it then I would say do it.

Madmax07SL....Spoke with the dealer today and they said there final offer was $15,000 for the 06 and $3500 for my 01. I told them my 01 was worth $4500 and is in mint shape. They would not bite at my counter offer so I told them its been nice doing business with you but I am keeping my car and looking elsewhere...Oh well. I think I am going to start looking for 07 max's since I would be more comfortable with CVT tranny....

I wonder why the 6th gen Maximas seem to have all these transmissions issues and the 4th gen 3.5 (of course) Altimas don't. Anyone know?

I wish I'm wrong, but it does seem to me that the problem of the tranny on the 6th gen maxima begins the moment you change (drain or flush)the transmission oil. Maybe some sampling is necessary: how many times have those who have gone beyond 120k changed their tranny oil? Most probably never did!

I just got a 2007 Maxima SE with leather, Bose, power sunroof in November. Had 58,000 miles and got it for $12,999. It was a one owner corporate clean car fax vehicle. I did have to pay $600 for new tires and $400 to ship it here. Im very happy with the purchase and could sell it for about $2,000 to $3000 more then I have in it. Although it was not mint when it arrived, I gave it my three day overhaul and detail service. Spend another $100 for all new filters and cleaning products. Its just about mint now.

Although I got a steal of a deal, I looked at other 07 maximas with miles in the 40000 and 50000 range still for around 15,000 to 16000 up to 20. All 07 and 08 have the CVT transmission so Im hoping this car will last well into the upper 100,000 miles with only minor issues. The 3.5L are very good motors overall.
