Brake Disc & Pad Recommendations

Hello,

New to the forum. My wife's 05 Maxima needs brakes and I'm looking for recommendations. I definitely need front pad and rotors (60K miles) and I might just do rear rotors with pads.

With 2 little kids, I have been out of the performance upgrade for a few years...just doing basic maintenance and repairs as needed.

Any info would be appreciated.

well, if you don't want performance then take a trip to kragon/autozone/dealer

if your looking for performance go with HAWK blues, and drilled and slotted from 88rotors.

I did this setup for about 200 bucks for the front. 90 for the pads 90 for the rotors and some shipping. it beats 400-500 dollars from big O and the Dealer.

88 rotors sells pretty good rotors too, they aren't the absolute top of the line best, but are still many many MANY times better than stock rotors. You don't need 400 dollar rotors unless you are tracking or racing your car. so why the slots but no track? well, for one, they remove dirt and debris so nothing can hang around long enough to score your rotors and develop terrible squeeks.

I have driven many cars and feel like the maxima has one of the worst braking performance for its price/quality. Nissan fail.... aftermarket brakes are the way to go..

Look on ebay you could find a combo, crossed drilled and slotted, front and rear + ceramic brake zinc or painted for about $250-300 shipped. You'll definitely feel a great amount of stopping power and the brake dust will be way less than stock.

Thanks guys. I ran drilled an slotted rotors on one of my Saab Turbos back in the day and loved them. I think this it a bit aggressive for my wife's Maxima. However, this car deserves better than Napa or Autozone parts. I'm searching online for some retailers... If you have any other recommendations, keep them coming.

Listen Dave I'm in the same situation as you...the wifey has an '08 Max that we bought used w/ 85K on it that I'm gonna do a whole brake job on this spring. Front and rear pads and rotors...she's not an aggressive driver by any means. When I borrow the car I'm a little of a lead foot but not a lot. This setup I'm giving you I've used time and time on all my vehicles and my friends have used this setup up on slightly modded street cars because it's not OEM and it's not too aggressive as far as compound goes. And it's affordable.

For pads I'm going with the Hawk HPS (High Performance Street) Series not as aggressive as the blues mentioned above because the blues are more for Auto-X as opposed to daily driving.

Front: HB448F.610 84.50 + free shipping on Amazon
Rear: HB370F.559 65.09 + free shipping on Amazon

For Rotors I used cross drilled and slotted from a company called Centric. They're the parent company for Stoptech and make a lot of OEM brake equipment for many companies. Here's their website so that you can order from them or find a place that deals with them. Centric Brake Parts

Good luck to you sir...and keep us updated.

Thanks Joe.

I found Centric high carbon rotors (p/n 125.42075 for front) and also Brembo rotors (not slotted or drilled). I'm not sure which to pick. I was planning to use StopTech 309 series pads.

I feel this is much better than stock (which is weak) and a decent price point.

Thoughts on Centric Vs Brembos? I used Brembo products before with much success. I have not used the Centric products.

Dave

PS I have a 2002 Saturn that I put 100 highway miles on a day as a commuter vehicle. I have not had any major issues with this car. When I needed brakes...I bought the basic Autozone rotors and medium quality pads. So far so good. In all of my life, I have never used local store brakes for any of my cars. However, these brakes are holding up quite well and for what I paid, it was worth it. My Maxima and Suburban deserve better parts!

Guys,

Quick update: I installed new Brembo discs and StopTech 309 series pads. Got it all done today in about 3.5 hours. All new brake fluid and a full bleed all the way around.

I have two minor issues left to deal with:
1. Have to adjust the E-brake. Even all the way up it barely grabs. I had to adjust the one rear E-brake pad set because it was dragging even when the brake was disengaged.
2. Have a small exhaust rattle. Unfortunately it only creeps up around 2500 rpms when under load. Can't make it rattle when revving in neutral or when having the wife drive past in front of the house. Last year, I had a broken exhaust bracket...now it is something else.

I bought the parts from http://www.importrp.com/ They have free shipping on orders over $100 and their prices were just a bit better than anyone else offering the same brake components.

Just checked the forum for the E-brake adjust and found it quickly. Of course, it takes a 10mm deep, and the small metric deep I have is 12mm. I'll have to grab one from work tomorrow.

Great Forum Here!
