Transmission question

Hello All,
I have 175,884 k on my 2004 Max. Today while I was driving home from work I felt a sudden decline in speed. I placed the shifter over to manual and the #5 lit up on the dash. I tried to downshift to 1 but it stayed in the number 5 speed. I put it back in drive and it shook kinda hard. I drove home but it was really slow until iI got up to 35 mph plus. This is the original trans too. Is it over for me guys ? Do I need a rebuilt trans or rebuilt gears? Please give me a little helping hand before I go to the stealership. Do you recommend a indy shop or dealership?

Your car is stuck in fail safe mode. Very common problem. Did you try turning it off and driving it again? Most people have fixed this problem by replacing the camshaft position sensors.

Hey ya'll,
Went outside to check the trans and took it around the block. Everything appeared normal. I immediately went to manual mode and the car shifted ok. I placed oit back into drive and it pulled fine. This little stint happen to me about 2 months ago and I thought maybe trans overheated or something. Let me kno what you guys think.

Thanks Crime! Is replacing a cam sensor a DIY or a dealership thing. I am pretty decent with mechanical stuff.

Unfortunately this is a fairly common issue.

No problem. It's a DIY job, each sensor is held in by one bolt. People typically change both of them at the same time. The parts are not too expensive, about $50 each.
