So im getting my windows tinted on my 08 black maxima, and I and kinda curious as to how the car would look with black rims, but i dont want to spend the money on new tims if i'm not posotive i'll like them.
My idea is so plastidip my current,stock, rims black with a glossifier on top. Any ideas or pictures od how thay would look? Thanks everyone

 

I know a lot of guys use plasti dip over on the other forum I belong too for my Envoy Denali, if you google search these words "GMTNation plasti dip", you'll see lots of threads on plasti dipping rims and other stuff too, lots of pictures of how it turned out and how to do as well. Those that use it swear by it, and most use a gloss over top to help it stand up to washing and road grit. What are your rims now? Another member there had bright chrome rims and he painted them black chrome, they looked really good on his black Envoy.

I did the rims, headlights, tail lights, corner lamps, roof strips & emblems in plastidip. The lights look great during the day, but @ night when they are on they look like absolute $**t!! People can see my headlights, but I cannot see the road.

 

.... Take it off the headlights, taillights and fogs & save yourself from running into Bambi.

 

Why would you plastidip them? I don't think I've ever seen someone plastidip those?

& yes, like someone mentioned, it can be taken off easily. I wanted to try it, so I did.

 

I really like the look it has, but the plastidip is just way too dark for the lights to shine through good. I'm looking for a way to make maybe some holes or something for the projectors to shine through unobstructed... But it's hard to tape off or cut with this stuff, since it just pulls.

ANY IDEAS???

 

Um... just bake and spray the inside of ur lights black. Im not liking the look and ur gonna get pulled over and possibly run into something at night. Not bad on rims tho.

 

That sounds like a s**t-load of work....
The rims look better in pictures, i'll probably end up doing them over with more coats this time.

I highly recommended it for roof strips, rims & emblems, but don't do the lights, except maybe the corner lamps that's it. Like I said in the day it looks awesome as ****, but @ night it's pretty horrible. It looks all splotchy & grainy when the lights are on. & I can only see about 3 or 4 feet ahead of me @ night. It has reduced my headlight output by 80-90% literally. You can get away with it on the tails, since they don't have to actually illuminate the road, they just need to be visible (that is if u can handle how splotchy & uneven they appear. As much as I don't want to, ill be removing it soon. I'm looking for an alternative.
Ill try to get pics of them on @ night so u guys can see what I mean.

 

Wow, now I've seen it all. Why would you use plastidip over lights?? Of course it's hard to see through, it's a solid non-translucent material. You wouldn't paint over your headlights and taillights body color would you? Actually, don't answer that question...

It DOES take work to do things right. Plastidip is like a disease, it makes people paint anything they can.

They do have to appear red though, and they have to reflect red as well. Just tint them, either with vinyl or spray tint.

 

I don't know why everyone is so up in arms about this... Lol!

& yes, people do paint "anything they can" with it, because once again: IT'S EXTREMELY EASY TO REMOVE. It's called experimenting.
But yeah, i'll probably end up going with tint or spray tint like you said.

As for the OP's question, give it a shot, do it right (clean them real well before plasti-dipping and do a few coats) and if you don't like it, peel it off. that's the great thing about Plasti-Dip it comes off if you don't like it!

 

Yeah, I considered that already. The part that scares me on their website is "Warning: Once applied to a plastic lens, VHT Nite-Shades™ cannot be satisfactorily removed."!!!!!!!!!

& I have seen youtube videos of it being removed with gasoline & a rag, but is that safe for the material??? That's another reason why I tried plastidip 1st, it's just a coating that peels off. Not sure about this other stuff.

 

I wanna vht my tails... If you watch a few videos then you see you can do it in layers. One or two layers of vht is dark enough for me. A 3rd if yoy want them to appear black when not lit

 

Personally I think it looks horrid. Do roof strips, grill, tails. Not rims.

 

I guess that's why we all buy our own cars/make our own payments... So we can do what we want with OUR OWN car.

Omg....did you really not take it off...you can buy vht night shades at autozone for 7$ a can and it comes off with alcohol nail paint remover with a rag and elbow grease...or you can buy the plastidip tint...check out my plastidip thread you'll see the vht on it

 

Yes I understand that but when YOUR car becomes a safety hazard at night it won't just be YOUR car and yourself in danger it will be everyone else around you

 

Might as well plastidip the windshield as well. That would be a killer swag combo with the headlights.

Everyone knows what plastidip is, it's a quick cheap route to temporarily paint something. Experimenting is fine, but it's the fact that you even TRIED it on your lights. It doesn't matter that it's removable, it's the fact that you did it. What were you expecting to happen?

LOL literally. You could've ended your sentence at "That would be a killer..." I was thinking that as well, might as well plastidip all the windows, you know, just to experiment.

 

Most of the car was black already, no need to plastidip what was black in the 1st place.

While I do (and already have) admitted the headlights don't shine as bright, they still do illuminate. Not to mention the fact that I already said i'll be taking it off.

Yes, there will be overspray on the tires when you are still in process. It was taken off when everything dried.
