Service Engine Soon light after Gas Cap mishap

I have a 2004 Maxima SL. Long story short, the gas cap wasn't put back on after filling gas. Noticed the next day, the Service Engine light came on (surprise, surprise !). Replaced the gas cap - took the car to Advance and made sure the code was due to gas cap being off for a day. And it was. (Sorry I forgot to get the code)

Here is the question - does the light go off on its own ? If so, how long does it take ? It has been two days now but the light is still on.

Wondering if i should disconnect the battery and if that will work as a last resort.

Another option is, I have to take the car in the dealer for a oil change - wondering if they reset it for me without ripping me off.

Any thoughts ? thanks !

once it does a drive cycle, the light will go off if nothing is wrong. give it a little time it will go off on its own.

Yep, give it a little time or if you have OBD2 scanner delete the code.

My buddy's 2013 wrx just lit up like a christmas tree after his gas cap wasn't put on correctly. It took about a week or two before the lights turned off. Be patient... or can't you just pull the negative battery cable?

I think in your manual there is a spill about that light.

I had same prob. on my 08 a couple times. The last time the light never went off. Finally changed the gas cap and BINGO!

it has to go through a series of startup cycles where the DTC isnt triggered to clear itself, cant think of the number off the top of my head. just gonna be a evap code, use a scanner to clear it
