So i needed a new RAD as to a leak, so i purchased a new one (5spd) and it had a IN and OUT for the AT lines. As i pulled out my old rad, and disconnected the bottom Rad hose, there was no Tranny lines??? it had a cooler. but it looks OEM??? anyone know anything regarding this?
Only the auto trans uses the oil cooler. All radiators have the oil cooler built in, including the ones Nissan installs. It is cheaper than stocking 2 different radiators.
walter white: The 2004 Maxima's had both 4 & 5 speed automatic's and 6 speed manual. The 5 speed auto did not use a transmission oil cooler. I assume that the 4 speed auto (since it was a carry-over from prior years) had a transmission oil cooler. The 6 speed standard would not. As noted by DennisMik probably less expensive for Nissan to use one radiator for all three transmissions type. 2005 and later years only had the 5 speed auto and 6 speed manual, therefore the radiators in those years did not contain a radiator with provisions for transmission cooler,
The 5sp auto does in fact have a transmission fluid cooler, but it's integrated to the transmission housing and doesn't use a cooler within the radiator like most other auto transmissions. On the 5spd auto, the tranny cooler is at the front of the transmission housing and looks like a bunch of flat steel discs stacked on top of each other. Picture courtesy of my6thgen.org
