Not too knowledgeable in this area, but seems un-smart (for lack of a better term) to purcahse a title-less vehicle unless from a relative or really good friend whom you know the whereabouts of.

Get the name of the previous owner and all other info that you can, such as an old address, phone number and anything else. Then start searching on the internet. Sometimes you can find them, sometimes not. There are websites that will charge you money to do this for you and maybe they can. I have never used one. Then there are local businesses like a private eye person that may be able to find them.

Bottom line is that you need to do some work, maybe spend a little money and hope you get lucky.

Good luck.

I'm thinking that dmv might be able to locate previous registered owners by using the vehicle id; that would give you a place to start your research.

Good luck, James

Wow, the previous owner really pulled one over on you...

Did you meet the previous owner at a public place when you bought the car? I don't understand why you can't go back to the dudes place or residence and find the guy.

You may want to go back to the DMV and beg for help. Tell them you realize you did something really stupid, realize that the previous owner lied to you, and you now understand how the transfer of title process works. Explain how you can't find the previous owner because of ______(fill in the blank here). Beg and beg and beg them to release the name and address of the previous owner.
Then hope you can find the dude and he's willing to do this for you.

Have any necessary paperwork in hand for a duplicate title to be ordered, so if you find the previous owner, he doesn't have to do any work except fill out the forms. Then YOU mail them in. 3 or 4 weeks later you go back to the dudes house and pick up the duplicate title.

Do you have the license plate number from when the other person owned the car? You can use that to get the name and address using the internet. It will cost you though.

But one thing you may want to do is see if the car has been reported stolen. This may tell you how to proceed.

DMV is not going to give you any information on the previous owner. They only do that for the police. If you didn't get a signed title you are basically in a bad spot. Find the person who sold you the car.
