I done really f'd up.. I put all my cam buckets or whatever you want to call the in order in a box left for a day came back dog knocked over box which I then realized half of my the buckets or solid lifters(like I said whatever they are called) are taller than the rest by a couple millimeters.... I know once I find out whether the taller ones are intake or exhaust I have to feeler gauge and blah blah blah which I'm ready for but the buckets fit the holes on both intake and exhaust but one set is taller.... I know I'm gonna get why didn't you mark them and blah blah blah but hey what do you expect from a 23 year old father who just does this as a hobby for family. PLEASE JUST HELP ME, I DONT NEED CRITICISM, IF YOU CANT HELP DONT, IF YOU CAN PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO
I haven't done this kind of work on a vq35, but the hyundia lambda v6 has a very similar looking head design. On that engine I would just install your valves, pop one of the tall ones on each side, set the cams in place, lock them down just enough to make sure they are seated correctly, and then see which one has a few thousandths of clearance and which one has the valve slightly opened. If you can't tell with the feeler gauge, then just dump some water into the ports and see which one holds the water. The side that holds the water is the side the taller ones belong on.
Hopefully all the buckets are the same height for the rest so you don't run into valve adjustment issues.
Hey thanks for the reply, I'm gonna try that I've been procrastinating putting it back together for this reason. I measured the buckets and one set is 2mm taller exactly... through all my research I've found nothing on different heights on solid lifters or buckets or anything of the sort.
This is the height difference I'm dealing with and I need to know which side is intake and which side is exhaust.. can't find anything online.. it's a 2005 maxima se 3.5 dohc
ended up being taller in exhaust and shorter in intake but the reason I was fixing the car was due to bad valve stem seals which were terrible and smoked on every start up unless you use Lucas additive then it smokes only after sitting but all is well and my brother can stop crying about his car.. we've been in the 100 degree weather lately so the job took 2 weeks as I did it in my driveway and I was concerned about the timing chains as I'm used to a belt but everything came apart and went together pretty simply I'd say the hardest thing to remove would be the power steering pump, the timing cover isn't as awkward but takes a good thinking and you must lift the engine an inch or two and the rear exhaust manifold heat shield which is only hard the first time because you can't see the bolts very well but I've removed it before changing the cats (all of them) so was pretty simple..
so to everyone on this forum who could help but didn't.. bad words and then some
Awesome, glad to hear you figured it out. I just finished doing the timing chain guide on my car, and I used a 3 foot long extension and a universal joint to loosen the bolt that connects the power steering pump. Made it a lot easier as I was able to use my impact gun.
