Red light/illumination on speedometer not working...

I have a 2005 Maxima & the red "pointer" for the speedometer does not light up anymore. The red pointers for the gas, temperature & rpm all illuminate fine/properly. Nissan service told it would be about $1500 to correct this problem, well... That is not an option! For a while, if I moved the instrument cluster (behind the steering wheel) I could get the red pointer to come back illuminated for a period of time, then would go back out. So, this means this is an intermittent connection issue & the lighting is not burned out. Has anyone one else had this issue, & more importantly, how did you fix it? I realize I may need to take the dash apart, but wandering if there are other options to fix... TIA...

I went to the junkyard and got a instrument cluster out of a 07, had to trim some of the plastic behind the instrument cluster for the electrical connector to reach, otherwise it was an easy modification. The only problem is the mileage on the odometer is stored in the instrument cluster, don't know how to change that though.
