STILLEN Rear Window/Trunk Spoilers
STILLEN Rear Window/Trunk Spoilers
They are being delivered on Tuesday (June 2nd). Anyone do the install themselves? Is it as simple as applying the double sided tape and making sure they're straight? I am going to shop around for a body shop to paint them but hope I can get away with installing them myself (with help). My technical skill is probably rated around 8ish.
Are there any techniques or surface treatments that should be used to make sure there is maximum adhesion? Or am I better off coughing up the dough to have the shop do it? I dont want these things flying off on the highway...

I ordered my roof spoiler yesterday as well. When I had my clk55 i had a roof spoiler put on and the way they did it was obviously clean the window with windex and newspaper. then they applied some kind of black glue type adhesive out of a tube, then they put the spoiler on as well as having the self tape adhesive it comes with. Pushed it down very well and make sure you do this early in the day so that it gets as much heat as possible, don't do it in the rainy weather or at nite. Make sure you put tape on both sides after you install the wing to hold it down as tight as possible. Also make sure you use the type that won't damage your paint so that after the 24hrs pass you can take it off without getting any tape residue on your upper panels. Hope I don't sound confusing but I also don't know much about this.

1) clean the window with an alcohol swipe.
2) use the 3m double sided tape that has the red backing. It has much stronger adhesion.
3) apply spoiler to the car.
4) open been and admire a job well done.
done and you have saved some money.

What about the trunk spoiler? Is it necessary to use any other adhesive or is the 3M tape sufficient? Do I need to use the "adhesion accelerator" STILLEN lists as an option to the install in the instructions? Should I lightly sand the area where the tape is to adhere? I am really hoping this is as straightforward as you say it is... prep the area well and slap it on..
Ok, I feel that it is time that I chime in on this since I have both a Rear Decklid Spoiler for the Trunk and a Rear Roof Spoiler.
For the Trunk/Decklid Spoiler I would definitely tell you that it should be drilled to be installed if it has the Rear Mounted Stoplight embedded into the Spoiler.
For the Rear Roof Spoiler all it takes is the 3M Tape that is installed on it already for you to just set in. If you want to have it hold even stronger then either use Permatex Clear RTV Silicone or Gorilla Glue to help hold it more securely in place.

I would highly suggest getting it painted. I think it should come looking pretty unfinished... nothing you would want to mount on your car as-is.
I believe it comes black its just the urethane pretty much so its no glass no nothing.
I got mine painted with the exact paint for our car for $80.00, I think it is worth it and it looks totally stock to the car, in fact i took the car to the dealer and one of the Salesman didn't even realize that it wasn't a stock part of the car.

I love the looks I get in my car, ppl are always oogling.
Yeah, it comes in black but it is simply the basic urethane material with no primer or coating of any kind.

I will definitly post pics when they are on. I ended up at a local Chevy dealer body shop to get them painted. They were incredibly nice, and blew EVERY other place out of the water... $150 to get both pieces painted, and a FREE install. I am pumped. They should be put on Monday, so I will post the pics when all is said and done.

This guy has the Stillen Roof Wing installed on his car. I can't take the pic's off of his car domain cause they would be to small so here is the link to it. http://www.cardomain.com/ride/3180937
He also has a crapload of cleaning supplies. They really help give an idea of the size of the car in this pic.
Here's some pics of my spoilers.... Finally got them on today. Apparently the urethane kept sweating some sort of solvent in the oven... They had to repaint them 3 times before the problem finally stopped. They prepped the pieces just as STILLEN advises, but apparently there is more to it... Anyway, here they are. They look great, the butt of the max looks so much better with the spoiler(s).

What's those things on the bottom rear sides of your car?
Are those Mudflaps? If so, I'm not feeling those too much they bulk out from the car and look out of place..

Yes, those are the factory mudflaps. I never really noticed them much until you pointed them out. I think they aren't quite as noticeable in person.
